As the title indicates, Part of the Deeper Sea explores the relationships between small incidents--seeing horseshoe crabs on the beach, attending high school play, finding a gray hair--and the larger themes of human life. What Harrod does best is make unexpected elegant connections in poems that recognize the laughter and sorrow of daily life. Underneath everything is what Lynn Powell called the "submerged terrain where we really live."

About the Author
Lois Marie Harrod is the author of five books of poetry in addition to Part of the Deeper Sea: most recently, This Is a Story You Already Know (Palanquin l999), Spelling the World Backwards (Palaquin 2000), Crazy Alice (Belle Mead, l999 2nd ed.). She has been widely published in periodicals, and is a l992-93 and l998 winner of fellowship from New Jersey Council on the Arts. She teaches high school English and is the Supervisor of Creative Writing and the New Jersey Governor's School of the Arts.
