Editorial Reviews

Review

This book would be invaluable for a graduate student preparing to do research in PDEs; I wish I had a copy in graduate school. ---- MAA Reviews

It is fun to teach from Evans' book. It explains many of the essential ideas and techniques of partial differential equations ... Every graduate student in analysis should read it. -----David Jerison, MIT

I use Partial Differential Equations to prepare my students for their Topic exam, which is a requirement before starting working on their dissertation. The book provides an excellent account of PDE's ... I am very happy with the preparation it provides my students. ----Carlos Kenig, University of Chicago

EXCELLENT!!!
I believe this is the basic tool for the partial differential equations man. A great second edition, with more workout problems.

This is by no means an introductory text. That said, I am in a class where this book is used but we spend a lot of our class time going over the proofs and it is an incredibly valuable skill that I am learning.

Pros: many topics, sound mathematical approach, almost complete book. It definely does the job for most courses on PDEs (in my case, Politecnico di Milano, it covers the topics for both a beginner and advanced course in pde)

Cons: proofs are a bit short, and a good part of the job is left to the reader - in this sense it is an advanced textbook.

All in all, a really good book!

First of all, this is not a book for a first course in PDE's. It requires prior knowledge of Functional Analysis and other disciplines of analysis which are not obtained in standard undergraduate courses. I agree with Professor Carlos Kenig, who says that suggests this book for his students before their first exam during the doctorate. In my opinion, it could have more motivation before the proofs or the introduction of a certain concepts. I like the new chapter about nonlinear wave equation.

This is undoubtedly one of the or maybe the best and most comprehensive text book ever written on PDEs. Covers a wide range of topics and the treatment of each topic is very clear and rigorous with sufficient proofs and explanation. Even for someone reading the book just to learn by oneself, it evolves slowly for the easy understanding of the reader. A must buy for everyone interested in PDEs.

Theoretically very highbrow. But it contributed tremendously to my understanding in my course. Particularly when dealing with topics like shocks and rarefactions, conservation laws, potential theory, harmonic functions, etc.
