Book Description

March 3, 2010 0821849743 978-0821849743 2
This is the second edition of the now definitive text on partial differential equations (PDE). It offers a comprehensive survey of modern techniques in the theoretical study of PDE with particular emphasis on nonlinear equations. Its wide scope and clear exposition make it a great text for a graduate course in PDE. For this edition, the author has made numerous changes, including a new chapter on nonlinear wave equations, more than 80 new exercises, several new sections, a significantly expanded bibliography.

Editorial Reviews

Review

This book would be invaluable for a graduate student preparing to do research in PDEs; I wish I had a copy in graduate school. ---- MAA Reviews

It is fun to teach from Evans' book. It explains many of the essential ideas and techniques of partial differential equations ... Every graduate student in analysis should read it. -----David Jerison, MIT

I use Partial Differential Equations to prepare my students for their Topic exam, which is a requirement before starting working on their dissertation. The book provides an excellent account of PDE's ... I am very happy with the preparation it provides my students. ----Carlos Kenig, University of Chicago

EXCELLENT!!!
I believe this is the basic tool for the partial differential equations man. A great second edition, with more workout problems.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent text, not for beginners. October 26, 2013
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
This is by no means an introductory text. That said, I am in a class where this book is used but we spend a lot of our class time going over the proofs and it is an incredibly valuable skill that I am learning.

5.0 out of 5 stars Complete book on the subject May 15, 2010
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
Pros: many topics, sound mathematical approach, almost complete book. It definely does the job for most courses on PDEs (in my case, Politecnico di Milano, it covers the topics for both a beginner and advanced course in pde)

Cons: proofs are a bit short, and a good part of the job is left to the reader - in this sense it is an advanced textbook.

All in all, a really good book!

4.0 out of 5 stars A "must read" reference for a PhD student in PDE's March 30, 2014
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
First of all, this is not a book for a first course in PDE's. It requires prior knowledge of Functional Analysis and other disciplines of analysis which are not obtained in standard undergraduate courses. I agree with Professor Carlos Kenig, who says that suggests this book for his students before their first exam during the doctorate. In my opinion, it could have more motivation before the proofs or the introduction of a certain concepts. I like the new chapter about nonlinear wave equation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good text!!! March 8, 2013

Theoretically very highbrow. But it contributed tremendously to my understanding in my course. Particularly when dealing with topics like shocks and rarefactions, conservation laws, potential theory, harmonic functions, etc.

5.0 out of 5 stars Definitive August 27, 2013

Evans SAYS it's not a reference. Maybe not, but for the average Joe like me, it's pretty a darned good survey of PDE.
