Book Description

0130093351 978-0130093356 November 8, 2002 2

Designed to prepare readers to better understand the current literature in research journals, this book explains the basics of classical PDEs and a wide variety of more modern methods—especially the use of functional analysis—which has characterized much of the recent development of PDEs. It gives equal treatment to elliptic, hyperbolic, and parabolic theory, and features an abundance of applications to equations that are important in physics and engineering—both on the basic and more advanced level. Provides worked, figures and illustrations, and extensive references to other literature. First-Order Equations. Principles for Higher-Order Equations. The Wave Equation. The Laplace Equation. The Heat Equation. Linear Functional Analysis. Differential Calculus Methods. Linear Elliptic Theory. Two Additional Methods. Systems of Conservation Laws. Linear and Nonlinear Diffusion. Linear and Nonlinear Waves. Nonlinear Elliptic Equations. Appendix on Physics. For anyone using PDEs in physics and engineering applications.

5.0 out of 5 stars It is my first choice, February 5, 2008

This review is from: Partial Differential Equations: Methods and Applications (2nd Edition) (Paperback)
This is a modern PDE book. Its content is divided in three big sections. The first section presents specific equations with their analytic solutions. Second section provides a brief review of functional analysis and calculus on Banach spaces to study linear PDE in an abstract framework.
The last section studies nonlinear PDE. This a good textbook for a graduate course and it competes with Evan's and Renady's books. The only weak point is the omission of numerical methods and its high price.

2.0 out of 5 stars Great book but binding is CRAP, December 29, 2011

This review is from: Partial Differential Equations: Methods and Applications (2nd Edition) (Paperback)
I feel bad leaving a bad review for such a nice book on PDE's with tons of good content, but the binding of this book is horrible. Even after owning this book for just a couple months, pages started falling out left and right. This problem is not unique to my copy of this book as almost all students in my course had similar problems with pages coming out.

The printing in the book was very weak in many places, which made
me return the book. I asked for the book to be exchanged for a
new copy, but instead I got a refund. I never got an explanation
why I didn't got a new copy of the book. In fact, there was no
communication at all.

In conclusion: Unacceptable product and bad service.
