Book Description

January 1, 2000

In Participating in God, Paul Fiddes seeks to develop an image of God that is both appropriate to the demands of pastoral care and firmly grounded in the revelation of God. He explores the way in which pastoral care shapes our doctrine of God and how faith in the triune God in turn shapes the practice of pastoral care. Fiddes elaborates on the Trinitarian context for the pastoral acts of intercessory prayer, suffering, granting forgiveness, the facing of death, the exercising of spiritual gifts, and the sacraments.

4.0 out of 5 stars Essential reading for pastors, April 8, 2005

This review is from: Participating in God: A Pastoral Doctrine of the Trinity (Paperback)
Fiddes attempts in this book to articulate a doctrine of God that is useful for pastoral concerns. He does an excellent job. According to Fiddes, God is defined by as the movement of Trinitarian relationships. As Christians, we are called to particpate in the Triune life of God. We do so through such practices as prayer, worship, baptism, and Eucharist. We come to know God as movement of relationship through particpation. The book is divided into two sections. The first is an articulation of the doctrine of God in the terms Fiddes sets out. The second is an expansion of that doctrine into other aspects of the Christian experience, such as prayer, forgiveness, and the sacraments.

This book is extremely well put together. Though I am not sure an understanding of God as relationships would supply answers to all metaphysical questions, Fiddes does not intend to describe "the god of the philosophers." I would recommend this book for those who are interested in the Trinity and all pastors.
