Editorial Reviews

'Most impressive is the quality of thought displayed throughout ... the book could be recommended as a tour de force of the intellect, quite apart from the subject matter it treats.' Dr David Abernethy, Stanford University --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Book Description

This book provides insight into an ongoing debate among political scientists and sociologist: why is political participation in some nations distributed evenly across economic, social, and educational lines, whereas other nations foster participation only by their privileged classes? --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Format: Paperback
This book makes a good start at a cross-national theory of public participation. The authors select a diverse set of countries and argue that participation is broadly linked to socioeconomic status. The authors are right in pointing out the difficulties in measuring participation cross-nationally. However, their functional equivalents measures just don't seem sufficient. There are too many questions. about whether the measures are comparable and possible intervening variables. Still, unlike many comparative politics books, this one does go to great lengths to question its measures and select a wide range of countries.
