PreSchool-Grade 2–When a cow decides to take her usual Saturday constitutional, she accidentally steps through a clothesline and ends up with a pair of bloomers covering her head. Unable to see and running off in a panic, the poor bovine wreaks havoc as she falls into a postmans cart that heads down a long hill, followed by all the characters whose lives shes disrupted: the underwears owner, the postman, some children, and a few yapping dogs. The chaos reaches a spectacularly hilarious conclusion when she crashes (literally) a wedding and flies off the end of a dock, landing in a passing boat, and the underwear blows back into its owners hands. The cow calmly steps ashore and goes about her usual business. The story is told with a dry wit and an economy of words, and the illustrations interpret the action with panache. Denton uses the spreads to distinct advantage as his bovine heroine careens and caroms from one potential disaster to the next. First graders particularly liked this tale of a cow taking her usual Saturday stroll. As the hilarious events unfold, critters large and small join in the fun, adding their own humorous commentary. Our six and seven year olds enjoyed the cartoony watercolor and ink illustrations, and noticed the foreshadowing of each upcoming accident-- from bloomers, to brides, to boats-- through visual clues found at the page's edge. These young reviewers recommend this title as a readaloud for grades K and 1, and encourage the author to write a sequel with more mammals contributing to the mischief!

I read a review about Mem Fox and how her books were highly recommended for reading to children. I purchased all I could at the time, and read them to my grandson every time I visit. He loves the pictures and the stories.

I got this book because we love Mem Fox, it's a cute story ... not in my top 3 Mem Fox stories ... but still a cute story that my very active two year old will sit still for.
