I work in a shop with a lot of dust, allergens, molds and chemicals, so when I say I really depend on my face masks, hear that I REALLY depend on them!

For tough jobs, I have a large, expensive full respirator but it's sure nice to use something a bit smaller, more portable and less unwieldy (or jarring to the neighbors) when possible. But you can't just use a cheap filter if there's more than just dust in the air. So as these are Niosh 95 and good for many other types of particles, I picked up a box of these some time ago and I was pleased to discover that they worked well for smaller jobs, and even some tough ones as well.

Interestingly, I discovered these filters when using the Flents Maxi-Mask Particulate Respirators, Ultra 95, 2 ct., because when I went to replace them (as the box only comes with TWO masks for $7, that's it), I ended up with the same box but with totally different masks inside. These other masks (same box, same brand, same label - but different filters), were made by a different manufacturer. And same with the next box, and the next one, even though they all listed the Flent brand and exact same box. I never knew what I was getting.

Now, I don't care who makes the masks if they work. But the problem is that sometimes I get masks that give off dangerous fumes which make me totally dizzy and sick. The feeling is like a deadly tequila hangover mixed with vertigo - not cool at all. The first time this happened, I didn't notice at first (figured I was a little tired, that's all), and by the time I took the mask off I was so sick that I missed an entire day of work because I simply had to lay down, I felt so incredibly ill.

I bought these for household cleaning, as I'm very sensitive to fumes and dust. I also work in the field of pulmonary healthcare and research, so I've learned a bit about occupational health. I saw these were NOISH-approved, so I figured they were legit. However, something about this these seems off, like maybe the factory they came from is not where they're typically manufactured. That does seem to happen with some sellers on Amazon, sell something online that would be tougher to self on shelves where it can actually be inspected for quality, expiration date, etc.

They feel sturdy but smell just awful, which I find very disconcerting. Minus 2 stars. I've been airing out a pair for a few weeks, and now the odor is finally gone. They were made in China, which i knew from the description. The packaging of the box itself is half-English, half-Chinese. The idea of there being non-English instructions is definitely nothing odd in it of itself, but it seems unusual that Spanish is omitted, as well as other languages. Something about the looks of it just doesn't seem like it was made at the usual manufacturing price, and that these are inferior for the brand. I'd be surprised if these were the same ones you'd find on the shelf if you bought them at a store out here.
They are not very comfortable to wear, but I think that is normal from what I've heard from patients working in industries where protective masks should be worn to prevent diseases like Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis. The stiffness probably just means the mask is actually doing its job.
