Book Description

Warrior July 23, 2003
The civil war that raged in Yugoslavia following the German invasion in 1941 was brutal, uncompromising and complex, pitting royalists, fascists communists, ethnic groups, and the Axis powers against one another in a shifting and bloody theatre of war. The Partisan forces under the command of Josip Broz Tito were a constant thorn in the side of the Wehrmacht divisions in the Balkans, prompting numerous anti-partisan operations. Using primary source material, stunning contemporary images and personal accounts, this book explores a well-known but little published subject for the first time, bringing to light the development, training, weaponry, tactics and combat experiences of Tito's formidable guerrilla force, and the events of this bloody theatre of World War II (1939-1945).

This review is from: Tito's Partisans 1941-45 (Warrior) (Paperback)
I would have given this title a 5 star, especially regarding a subject not often seen Stateside. However, the small bone I have to pick, is the author not even mentioning the savagery with which this war was fought. The only hint was that the Partisans avoided contact with the 7th SS Prinz Eugen Gebirgsjaeger Division. The picture painted of the Partisans behavior was always correct, and altruistic. If the recent war in the Balkans is any indication of how the war was conducted, then the impression one gains from this book is a distorted one. Otherwise, I am glad to have the title on my shelf. The two books I have by Otto Kumm (auf Deutsch)about Prinz Eugen, gloss over the brutal nature of this conflict as well. Apparently, it is a realm considered too distasteful.
