I'm not into yoga,
By John Mathews (Arizona) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Partner Yoga: Making Contact for Physical, Emotional, and Spiritual Growth (Paperback)
I'm a middle aged, middle class, stressed out business person. I don't eat tofu, and wouldn't normally consider a book like this. A close friend insisted we try, and I'm amazed and pleased. Quickly, I've become more flexible and feel the results. Even better, it's fun and easy to follow the authors' guidance. The pictures are plentiful and helpful, and the book's overall quality is superb. Buy it and try it.

This is a beautifully written book with great pictures, it is very easy to understand and follow. There are lots of helpful tips, and information regarding the benefits of each pose. I taught a class using the book as my text, and the results were outstanding!

As a yoga practitioner for over seven years, I have been very interested in expanding my practice. The door to partner yoga was opened and in walked this wonderful book. I love the easy to read prose and the pictures are just beautiful. Anyone can benefit from using the ideas and practice techniques which are described in a very gentle way. Beginners and experienced yogis and yoginis will find something to love in Partner Yoga. I highly recommend this book!

Easy to follow, fun to do.,

My boyfriend and I got this book to try together; he'd had some yoga experience, while I am a beginner. The instructions and pictures are very clear and easy to follow, and there are a wide variety of positions ranging from very easy to very difficult. Some are less intimidating than they look! The instructions are very helpful, and then to realize afterward you have actually done the things in the picture is quite a rush.Only experienced yoga students will be able to do everything in the book from the start, but most people in reasonable shape will be able to do a good portion of it and work up to the rest. A good way to get close to your partner while exercising, and I felt great afterward as well. Worth a shot for those who want to add a little variety!

We're just beginners,
By
This review is from: Partner Yoga: Making Contact for Physical, Emotional, and Spiritual Growth (Paperback)
My fiance and I are just beginners at yoga, but we've found that this book is fabulous. It's fun, informative, and a beautiful book. Some of the positions are definitely too hard for beginners, but you're supposed to work up to those. I also sometimes find that it's difficult (if you have an apartment or other small space to work in) to find a big enough space. And although doing yoga outside or on the beach (as the book illustrates and suggests) would be fun, it's not always feasible or practical. But this book still has wonderful information, beautiful pictures, and is a must have for a person who wants to involve their partner or friends in yoga!

A Guide for Advanced Yogis,

This review is from: Partner Yoga: Making Contact for Physical, Emotional, and Spiritual Growth (Paperback)
This book is beautifully written, with great photography, but leans more toward those who are young, strong, and agile. Many of the poses offered look more acrobatic than yogic, but if you can begin working on them while you are young, they might someday be accessible. There is usable information an older or less experienced person would be able to glean from the text, but much of it is simply out of reach for those who are less supple or farther along in years.

Great for beginners and experts!,

I had wanted to begin practicing yoga for some time, when I came across this book. I managed to get my boyfriend to try it with me and we had the greatest time learning together! Both first-timers, the book showed the positions in action and had great details and breathing suggestions. And because it is a book, you go at your own pace (we still haven't reached the asanas at the back yet!). I think anyone at any level could really gain knowledge from this book. It's very straightforward and lets you go at your own pace!I really enjoy this book, and don't plan on buying another!

Exercise to Strengthen Your Relationship,
By Tanya Aram (Folsom, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Partner Yoga: Making Contact for Physical, Emotional, and Spiritual Growth (Paperback)
This book is a must for those just beginning or already advanced in yoga skills. For beginners it's a great way to introduce yourself to yoga because you are learning with a partner which in itself gives you more motivation to stick with it. My husband and I are really enjoying taking the time to quiet down and spend 30 minutes together in the evenings and it's also physically a great workout. I've taken yoga classes at the gym and never really found much of an interest in it, but we are going to stick with Partner Yoga because it offers so much on so many different levels! You've just got to try this!

A wonderful new yoga,
By
This review is from: Partner Yoga: Making Contact for Physical, Emotional, and Spiritual Growth (Paperback)
This book is written such that someone with only a smattering of yoga background can understand the postures, but would be a bit confusing to someone with no background at all. Some of the poses are easy and provide immediate beneficial effects. Others are more difficult and bring a sense of accomplishment when they are finally attained. However, some yield almost no relief or are too difficult to attain without sufficient strength. The postures are all pictured individually with tips and instructions which are usually easy to follow and are grouped into levels of increasing difficulty. There are also suggested flows and tools for partners to develop their own. Overall, this book can guide beginners into developing greater flexibility and trust as well as suggest more difficult movements when partners are ready to advance.

Good technique - not too touchy-feely,

This review is from: Partner Yoga - Making Contact for Physical, Emotional, and Spiritual Growth (Paperback)
I found this book in the library, looking for something I could practice with my "yoga buddy". We are both yoga teachers, and enjoy practicing together, but she's not going to be sitting in my lap and gazing deeply into my eyes, or any of that. This is the first partner yoga book I've come across that isn't intended exclusively for romantic partners. It is more gymnastic than intimate. With a romantic partner, one could easily emphasize the intimate connection, but there are plenty of poses that aren't too "weird" to do with a casual friend.
With some poses, one person assists the other in deepening the stretch, like pulling a person forward into bound angle pose. In some, both people lean against each other similar to how you might use a wall in "flat" standing poses like Warrior 2 or Triangle. In some, one person stacks their pose on top of the other, in an acrobatic sort of way, like doing child's pose in a stack or doing down dog while bracing your feet against the back/hips of someone else doing down dog. (Those seem more acrobatic than yogic, but fun and challenging.) And in some, you are just doing a pose right next to each other, but not drastically changing the pose. I also love that it gives some advice on dealing with a partner of different height or proportions. (Look at the photo of the authors on the front or back cover. The woman is more than a foot shorter than her husband.) |
