About the Author

Edward M. Read, LCSW, MAC, is a Supervising United States Probation Officer for the US District Court for the District of Columbia. He has worked in the field of corrections for over twenty years, involving both community corrections supervision as well as experience with the federal Bureau of Prisons. He is a graduate of Columbia University School of Social Work and worked briefly for the Department of State's Office of Medical Services, in their employee assistance program. Mr. Read currently manages a unit of federal probation officers, many of whom supervise offenders with serious histories of chemical dependency. He also oversees the office's intensive supervision team, consisting of high profile, high-risk, and potentially violent recidivists. Mr. Read is known for his extensive writing and publication within the field of addictions for a variety of trade publications, including Hazelden and the American Correctional Association (ACA). He has authored or co-authored a total of three books and half a dozen articles. He serves as a consultant to the Federal Judicial Center for their broadcast training in addictions and serves as the district's Firearms Instructor. Mr. Read lives with his wife, also a federal probation officer (District of Maryland), and two children in Takoma Park, Maryland.
