Considered one of the most versatile talents in Hollywood today, Robert Townsend is regarded by many as a renaissance man. He is an actor, director, producer, comedian and writer with a career that spans over 15 years. A few of his films include "The Five Heartbeats" and "A Soldier’s Story" directed by Norman Jewison, and "The Mighty Quinn" with Denzel Washington. Townsend truly broke ground in 1987 when he wrote, directed, produced, and starred in the classic comedy, "Hollywood Shuffle". For the small screen, he created and produced two ground breaking variety shows, the Cable Ace Award Winning "Robert Townsend Partners In Crime" for HBO and the Fox Television Variety Show, "Townsend Television." Originally aired on HBO, Robert Townsend’s, "Partners In Crime" will make its DVD and VHS debut! The release features some of America’s top African American talent including: Keenen Ivory Wayans, Damon Wayans and more!

2.0 out of 5 stars ORIGINAL PROGRAM ON HBO WAS BETTER-A SHAME THAT SOME GOOD COMEDY WAS CUT OR EDITED OUT, June 15, 2006

This review is from: Partners In Crime (DVD)
I remember watching Robert Townsend and His Partners In Crime back in the 80's on HBO. The Volume 1 DVD has some of the comedy items I remember, but it has unfortunately been edited or cut up and is not like the original was. One skit I recall in particular that was one of the funniest things I have seen to date was called "Farters Anonymous", where people confess that they are hooked and addicted, but the center helped them. As they continue, you realize they are talking about a rather large flatulance problem that they have overcome. At the end, several members of this group hold candles say their first name and admit they are a "farter" or they "poot", until one fellow admits that he just ate a "big old can of beans". The group immedately blows out the candles as a 1-800-555-POOT number flashes across the screen. This item is not in this DVD, which I found very dissapointing. However, I did enjoy watching the black version of "Dynasty" again and some of the stand up comedians were pretty funny. To sum it all up in a nutshell, I was not particularly thrilled with Volume 1 of Partners In Crime. It is rather blase. I have not watched Volumes 2 and 3 as yet, but hope that some of the missing comedy items I remember are included.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must have for any true comedy fan, December 25, 2005

This review is from: Partners In Crime (DVD)
So glad to find this on Amazon! As a teen, my friends and I watched the entire series. We still laugh about it and ocassionally repeat lines from the show. There is a lot of talent packed into this program. Many of his "Partners In Crime" were virtually unheard of when the special aired on HBO back in the 80's. An easy way to own footage of today's top sitcom and movie comedians before they made it big. Check out their style and see what they were like before blowing up. If you're a true fan of comedy, then this dvd is for you. This will no doubt become a classic (it already is in my book).

3.0 out of 5 stars I love it but there is a skit missing, November 14, 2009

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I remember seeing this in the late 80's when I was a tween but the skit that's missing 1-800-POOP. They should of had it on here, because I was watching this with my family and we were looking for it. But we still had a lot of laughs especially seeing "The Bold, The Black, The Beautiful"
