Editorial Reviews

One of the most recorded of Memphis-based guitarists of the late '20s, Furry Lewis' subsequent fame 40 years later in the '60s was based largely on the strength of his early songs. A great blues storyteller and an extremely nimble-fingered guitarist right into his seventies, he was equally adept at blues and ragtime. The live sessions on this CD begins with Bukka White playing his National steel guitar, performing in the style of Charlie Patton. Most of music here was recorded on Furry's wooden Gibson guitar during a party at his home in 1968. The joking and banter among Bukka, Furry and friends recorded here is priceless.

5.0 out of 5 stars Informal recordings of legendary bluesmen playing for the simple joy of it., July 13, 2008

or a lot of folks, this record is far from the best representation of either Furry Lewis or Bukka White. Both men were in their declining years when this was recorded in Furry's home in 1968. And both were, quite frankly, a little inebriated during much of this informal session.

Yet there are few records of any vintage, that better demonstrate the sheer joy that blues music can evoke. Here we have two old friends - celebrated elder statesmen of the blues - playing, laughing and drinking in the relaxed company of friends while a tape player rolls. They make off-color jokes, swap guitars, remark on their favorite attributes of beer (Bukka is a suds fan) and try vigorously to wake a drunk neighbor woman who has fallen asleep on Furry's bed. And in between all of this, they play some absolutely wonderful blues. There are missed notes and flubbed lyrics, but it hardly matters. This is what blues music is all about. Very highly recommended.

These guys were great once, but get their old stuff not this CD, it does have some good ideas for grooves if you play delta blues, but the skills are a little on the low side, sorry yall........
