Book Description

No invitation, no alibi…

Jolie Goodman is a perennial good girl—which is how she wound up selling shoes at Neiman Marcus during the holiday season: She walked out on her brokerage job because her boss asked her to do something unethical. Now she’s trying to start her own brokerage firm in Atlanta at the worst possible time. Also pressing on her mind is the fact that her boyfriend of the last few months is missing…along with her car. With problems piling on, she manages to make a new friend at work, but too late she realizes her gal pal Carlotta Wren is a serial party crasher—which is fun…at first. But no one’s laughing when a body turns up at an upscale party they’ve crashed and they’re the only people who weren’t supposed to be there! Jolie vows she’ll never crash another party…if she gets out of this mess alive.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Modern-day Cinderella Jolie Goodman isn't dressing up for the ball in Miu Miu shoes and an Ultrasuede jumpsuit "borrowed" from Neiman Marcus in order to find her princeâ€"she's trying to discover who's behind the disappearance of her shady boyfriend. And instead of being hindered by two evil stepsisters, Jolie has two expert party crashers at her side, sneaking her into Atlanta's most exclusive affairs so that she can grill her boyfriend's upper-class pals. Jolie's prince eventually does appear, in the form of hunky media empire heir Beck Underwood, satisfying the book's "romantic suspense" label, but as Jolie stumbles from one near disaster to another, Bond (Kill the Competition, etc.) lays on the laughs with such enthusiasm that "comic suspense" might be a better description. The danger and hilarity stirred up by Jolie's amateur sleuthing play strongly off each other, leaving Beck looking like a monkey in the middle until the unlikely, syrupy denouement, which seems as tacked on and superfluous as a giant bow on an elegant Vera Wang gown. But Bond delivers a true catch-you-by-surprise plot twist that gives the story a good yank in the right direction and may even leave readers with a few devious thoughts on how to crash some parties of their own.

4.0 out of 5 stars I liked it October 16, 2010
By SusieJ
Format:Mass Market Paperback
This is a fun, light-hearted mystery/romance. No graphic sex, no graphic violence. The best part of the book is the mystery. The setting is fun: Neiman Marcus and exclusive Atlanta parties that our heroine "crashes" with some new friends. The side characters are, well, real characters. One dresses in goth and dates married men; the other dresses in fancy clothes that she buys, then returns to Neimans, and has a brother who's in debt to loan sharks, Our heroine, Jolie, just started working in the shoe department at Neimans and ends up being accused of murder.

Jolie is a stereotypical romance heroine: poor, orphaned, a bit shy, smart, hardworking, not blatantly beautiful, but cleans up well. Improbably, a rich and handsome man falls for her and becomes her knight-in-shining armour. OK, the romance is the weakest part of the book. But it has a guaranteed happy ending. The writing is good. The mystery is well-developed. The characters - especially the side characters - are really interesting. In fact, the side characters, Carlotta and Hannah, become the main characters in Stephanie Bond's Body Movers series.

If you're looking for a well-written romance or light-hearted mystery, this is a good one. It's a great vacation read. After you're done with it, check out the Body Mover's series to see what Carlotta and Hannah are up to next.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fun read! March 22, 2005
Format:Mass Market Paperback
This book had a little of everything in it. From humor to a great mystery, and an "edge of your seat" suspense. The characters were well drawn out, leaving no voids in your imagination. I enjoyed every minute of it! I look forward to reading more from Ms. Bond.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous read! January 31, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
After reading several disappointing romantic comedies towards the end of last year (titles not disclosed), I have now read three gems in a row! (The other two being I'm Dreaming of a Wilde Christmas (A laugh-out-loud romantic comedy) and An Idiot in Love (a laugh out loud comedy)) Party Crashers is a fun read that has mystery, intrigue, romance and a lot of humor. I really like the character of Jolie - the unexpected corners she turns really keeps you gripped and does make this a page-turner. Stephanie Bond's style of writing really appeals to me, her books are well written and very easy to follow.

This book is a winner!

Realtor Jolie Goodman quit her job over her new boss demanding she do an unethical act in order to make a sale. Jolie temporarily sells shoes at the Nieman Marcus in Atlanta's Lenox Mall. There she meets Beck Underwood of Underwood Broadcasting, who needs socks and shoes having just returned from Central America. The duo is attracted to one another, but nothing comes of it not jus because she is working, but police Detective Salyers arrives to question Jolie about her missing boyfriend Gary Hagan, whose car was found in the Chattahoochee with a dead woman inside.
The police suspect that Jolie abetted Gary in his escape though she denies involvement. As Detective Salyers searches for Gary, he quietly warns Jolie to watch herself as he is in danger and she might be. Meanwhile she runs into Beck at an event that she crashes and soon they begin to fall in love. However, after Gary, she has doubts about her taste in men besides which she is in danger from people who believe she has something of Gary's that they want at any cost.
Though the police procedural-Gary subplot in many ways takes center stage and the conspiracy behind all this is overdone, the contemporary romance between Jolie and Beck is well written and cleverly interwoven with the case. The support cast adds depth especially those co-workers like the ultra-tall long necked professional party crasher who mentors the heroine in the arts of attending celebrity events for free. Fans will appreciate this mixing of humor and love within in a crime thriller while attending an advanced class in Party Crashing 301.

2.0 out of 5 stars Unbelievably boring! March 3, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
I was so disappointed with this book. I did not find it to be at all suspenseful, and the romance was surface at best. I found the characters to be flat and unlikable.

I am a serious reader and desire a plot that unfolds. There really was no plot here. A juvenile romance story.

More About the Author

Stephanie Bond was several years into a corporate computer programming career when an instructor in her night school MBA program remarked that she had a flair for writing and encouraged her to submit one of her projects to academic journals. "But," Stephanie says, "all I could think was 'I wonder if I could write a romance novel?'" Bond grew up on a farm in eastern Kentucky where the entertainment choices were few. Luckily, she had a beloved aunt who shared her passion for reading. "When she visited once a year, she brought boxes and boxes of gothic novels by Victoria Holt and Phyllis Whitney and lush historical romances--I was in heaven! So suddenly thinking about writing in the genre of the books I loved was very exciting." After writing every spare moment for two years, Stephanie sold her first romantic comedy manuscript, IRRESISTIBLE? to Harlequin books. Two years later, she walked away from her corporate career to write commercial fiction full time. To date, she's published over 60 romance and mystery projects with Random House, St. Martin's Press, HarperCollins, and Mira Books, and is most well-known for her BODY MOVERS humorous mystery series. Her newest series is TWO GUYS DETECTIVE AGENCY (about two sisters whose last name is Guy). Stephanie lives in midtown Atlanta and is probably working on a story at this very moment.
