More About the Author

I am Rachel Hollis. A wife, a mother, a Southern Girl, an LA Woman, and for all intents and purposes Party Planner Extraordinaire! I LOVE parties... I love everything about them. I love the food, the wine, having friends and family and people from all walks of life together in one well-decorated space! I don't know anyone who doesn't like a good party... and if there are people out there who don't, maybe that's just because you haven't been to one of mine!
I grew up in a big loud Okie family. Daddy was a Pentecostal minister and Mama was the church pianist... and PS, I know the words to all the old-timey hymns in case you want to break into three-part harmony later. I moved to Los Angeles to go to college and promptly met a boy named David who was as handsome as he was funny. First I made that boy my best friend, and then I made him my husband. 10 years later we have three equally handsome/hilarious little boys named Jackson, Sawyer, and Ford. We live in LA where we spend our time doing super cool/sexy things like going to soccer practice and hitting up any restaurant where kids eat free with the purchase of an adult entrée.

A fun read that makes you feel like you have an inside look at the party planning business. Yes, there is drama, but what business doesn't?
I loved the inside look at all the little things that go into making a party a success. I am a huge crafter. I had no idea that event planners did all of the stuff in-house compared to out-sourcing and working with other vendors. I'm wondering if that is the norm?
Book has a nice steady pace. Even though the main character is treated like crap, the way the book is written it almost makes you not feel sorry for her because she is always in such awe.
I would say the book is very similar to a Sandra Bullock movie. Funny, sweet, a bit dramatic, has a mean girl in it, has a love story, she tells off the mean girl and gets the guy.

I enjoyed Rachel Hollis' debut novel and look forward to future books, as I imagine the technical side of her writing will begin to improve. The story was fun and the characters felt real, but the countless grammatical and punctuation errors detracted from my ability to read effortlessly and get lost in the story. Some people can read past that, but it's always been a struggle for me. If that sort of thing doesn't bug you, you'll really enjoy this book!

Format: Paperback
Twenty-something Texas-born-and-bred Landon Brinkley is ready to finally live her dream. While growing up in a small town in Texas, she longed for nothing more than a career as a famous event planner. By working hard, she has managed to secure a position as an intern at her idol Selah Smith’s event planning agency in Los Angeles, SSE. Even though it’s an unpaid job, Landon can’t wait to finally do what she was born to do. However, as soon as she sets foot in the office, she realises the LA world of event planning is ruthless and not at all what she had expected it to be. Yet, failure is not an option for Landon. She is finally given the chance to do what she wants to do, but all of a sudden she is forced to decide whether she is willing to give up absolutely everything for this dream or not.

True love; that’s probably the two words I’d use to describe what I was feeling while reading ‘Party Girl.’ I honestly truly loved everything about it. From the first few pages it already became clear that the book has a wonderful heroine at its centre: Landon is easily loveable with her infectious enthusiasm and her determination to make her dreams come true. Yet, there is also a great mix of secondary characters from quirky Miko (Landon’s colleague at work), tough Max (Landon’s roommate), and the ultimate villain in the form of Selah Smith (Landon’s new boss). The combination of this wonderful cast of characters, the amazing setting (I’m sure many of us readers wonder what it would be like working at an elite event planning company) and a truly entertaining storyline had me hooked from the very first page; I didn’t want to put it down, but at the same time I never wanted it to end (unfortunately, it had to)!

This novel starts out really poorly, with a plethora of dumb girl/fashion bits, but gradually gets some better as it progresses. This story is nothing new...naive girl, wicked boss and handsome stranger. Ho-hum! If you are in to anything celebrity, you might find this more interesting than People Magazine.
With a little polish and a bit more mature outlook, I think this story could have read much better if it was just a bit more sophisticated. It seemed to pander to the gum chewing set.

Fresh, sunny and spirited, Party Girl is a charming and delightfully entertaining big city adventure for the lofty dreamer in all of us. This vibrant and confectionery tale takes the reader deep into the fast-paced trendy trenches of high-end event planning.

We see every rich, juicy detail through the starry eyes of the novel's sweet lovable heroine Landon. Her sparkly bliss and infectious enthusiasm are a joy to experience. She's an endearing character- strong willed, self respecting and generous- a shining light and a striking contrast to the venomous trolls whose will and oppressive authority she must endure and submit to. Despite every test, sabotage and stumble, Landon pushes through. She's tenacious, hard working and so determined! She comes out on the other side, exhausted, but also stronger and wiser. With her dreams still fully intact, Landon charges ahead- ready for the next invigorating challenge. It's inspiring!

Amongst all of the chaos and glitzy drama, a blushing attraction and mutual fascination develops between Landon and the butterflies-inducing and breathtakingly beautiful Brody. Their complicated relationship is secondary to her career and life long goals- but she can't deny her feelings any more than he can. Landon and Brody's unconventional and innocent courtship is infused with honest enchantment and softness. As one of the book's many highlights, their happily ever after will leave you wistful and wishing for more.

I truly enjoyed reading this enlivening and empowering youthful journey. Party Girl is a golden debut worth sharing.
