5.0 out of 5 stars This Soundtrack Will Make You Want to Party.
Simply one of the best soundtracks released in the last five years, the soundtrack to "Party Girl," contains many great club anthems and dance songs that will make you move all night long. Reflecting the film's central idea of club hopping and a street-smart young woman, the "Party Girl" soundtrack contains some of today's best artists all on one disc...

2.0 out of 5 stars Missing Chantay Savage!
The soundtrack is OK, but is MISSING the BEST song in the movie - the HOUSE MIX of CHANTAY SAVAGE's amazing Chicago-style house anthem IF YOU BELIEVE - produced by STEVE SILK HURLEY and REMIXED by E-SMOOVE - oh well, search out the 12" for the full 13-minute opus!

Simply one of the best soundtracks released in the last five years, the soundtrack to "Party Girl," contains many great club anthems and dance songs that will make you move all night long. Reflecting the film's central idea of club hopping and a street-smart young woman, the "Party Girl" soundtrack contains some of today's best artists all on one disc.

The film's opening song, "Mama Told Me Not To Come" by The Wolfgang Press sounds great, although it doesn't reflect the music played in New York's clubs. Chanelle's "I'll Keep Coming Back" is a fierce track featuring a very talented dive-in-the-making.

Other noteworthy songs include both "Big Apple Boogaloo" by Brooklyn Funk Essentials AND "Anyone Could Happen To Me" by Nation Of Abel which balance the club tracks with the other transitional music found throughout the film. The hip-hop classic "Peter Piper" by Run DMC is also included on this soundtrack, which gave me many memories of life in New York during the 1980's.

"Music Selector Is The Soul Reflector" by Deee-Lite features DJ Towa Tei's amazing trance-like sounds and Lady Miss Kier's haunting vocals, which blend into a perfect mix. And finally no club album can be complete without one of the dance world's great divas, Ultra Nate, singing the film's title track "Party Girl (Turn Me Loose)". Excellent as always, Ultra Nate's song caps this soundtrack.

My only disappointment on this soundtrack that some of the film's best tracks including "If You Believe-Believe in Me" by Chantay Savage (this was the song played in the scene were Mary learns the Dewey Decimal system and catwalks on the library tables at night), "In My House" (played during Mary's final party at the warehouse), and the techno groove played while the male dancers are dancing at Renee's club). I was looking forward to hear Chantay's fierce and vicious track, but was left disappointed. It is a very hard-to-find single.

The lines from the film heard throughout the album are amusing and an added bonus, and one must fast forward through all the blank space after the end of Ultra Nate's song to hear Mary's infamous "Dewey Decimal" speech. It is a classic!

Truly a soundtrack one must have in their collection, especially if you are a big dance enthusiast.

4.0 out of 5 stars Club Music and Great Plusses, January 25, 2001
By

This review is from: Party Girl: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
For those of you who have seen the movie, the Party Girl soundtrack is everything you would think it is.

To start off, with tracks such as the ones by The Wolfgang Press, Ultra Nate and DeeLite are excellently produced and really fun listening examples of quintessential mid 90s... club music - with the hard, quick beats and sort of strange astral sounding samplers. (All of these tracks are actually featured in the many club scenes in the movie).

Old School hip-hop is also represented with Run DMC's "Peter Piper" which was more than what so much of rap was back in those days - it's much more than just a sparse beat and minimalistic synthesized or sampled backups. Remember Run DMC was at the top of the rap game back then and their production shows that.

Many other tracks round out the eclecticism of this CD, most notably Khaled's excellent Arabic track - most listeners won't understand what he's saying, but his passion, rich voice, and intoxicating vocals are undeniable on this track as I am sure they are elsewhere.

The real surprise on this CD, however, comes at the end of many of the tracks on the CD. Though the dialogue in the movie was, overall, flat, you could count on the incomparable Parker Posey for her repertoire of underhanded bitchiness and very memorable one-liners, many of the best of these being offered as sound bytes at the end of many of these tracks. Actually, on one Parker Posey fansite, voted as the most favorite quote of hers from any of her movies is the one from Party Girl beginning "I would like a nice, powerful, mind-altering substance..." and this, among others, is included as one of the soundbytes. The laughs will really roll with these clips!

For Parker Posey afficionados and Party Girl lovers, you couldn't ask for more from this cd (thumbnail pics galore on the liner notes, to boot) - it's both a trip down memory lane as well as a random sampling of some of the best one-liners from the current queen of camp disillusionment. But for those of you who've never seen the movie, just the eclectic and eminently replayable group of tracks on this CD make it a very worthwhile investment.

5.0 out of 5 stars What fun!, June 25, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Party Girl: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
This is one of the best soundtracks I have ever heard. What makes it so good is that not only does it capture the spirit of the motion picture, but it also contains great individual songs that are easy to fall in love with. The last track, especially, is a great, fun song that I'd probably never have heard anywhere else...now it's part of my all-time feel-good playlist.

I can't wait to see this movie. I think the song
played in the scene with Mary and Natasha
is U GOT ME UP by Dajae.

While I do love the music on this soundtrack, Mr. Hernandez's review is incorrect in stating that Deee-Lite's "Music Selector is the Soul Reflector" does not feature DJ Towa Tei, but rather DJ Ani.

This is a feel-good mix of generic house and dance mixes; however, it is a bit disappointing because several of the best tracks in the film are not included on the soundtrack at all.
