Book Description

June 1, 2002
Best selling novelist Zoey McGuire is positive that the only man who will ever see her naked again is her gynaecologist. It certainly won't be her conniving ex-husband. Now, penniless and apartment-less, Zoey is heading back to the city that never sleeps...and where trouble never snoozes. Trouble is Jade Cohen's favourite pastime. The raven-haired real estate agent loves to help her clients "christen" every room of their fabulously luxe apartments, but she has no interest in taking the keys for good. Why search for the "r' word when the big "0" is so much more fun? African American actress Marielle Griffin doesn't have time to worry about men. She's too busy working on her career, which is supposed to be "Broadway Star," not "Professional Waitress." Until she gets that big break, she's bartending at Manhattan hot spot Club Vermillion, hoping for both a call from her agent-and a booty call from a certain delicious club owner. Armed with each other-and the occasional stiff drink-these three best friends are picking up the pieces and taking Manhattan by storm: on the streets, between the sheets, and everywhere in between!

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

They may be down on their luck, but first-time novelist Roz Bailey's trio of fabulous 30-something Manhattanites are still the eponymous Party Girls in this Sex and the City-style urban romp. Zoey, Jade and Marielle are old college friends reunited when Zoey a bestselling novelist who now can't seem to write anything but sex scenes turns up in the big city after losing her Connecticut house to her ex-husband. She and Marielle, a floundering actress-cum-waitress, try to revive their careers by day and flagging love lives by night at Club Vermillion ("there's a line to get in, plus a line of ambulances for the... kids who O.D."), while Jade, a high-powered real estate broker and the busiest party girl of them all, decides to give monogamy a whirl.

From Booklist

Writer Zoey McGuire flees the suburbs of Connecticut and her failed marriage for her editor's posh apartment in New York. Luckily her friends are there to cheer her up: aspiring actress Marielle, real estate agent and recent tantric sex convert Jade, and commitment-shy Merlin. Zoey, the author of three successful novels, is trying to come up with a fourth that will please the audience who loved her first novel, His Daughter's Keeper. Marielle is frustrated with her job as a bartender at a fancy nightclub and her agent's ineptitude at finding her decent auditions. Jade has decided that she needs to find a billionaire to make her dreams come true. And Merlin is trying to decide whether to settle down with his longtime boyfriend, Josh. When Zoey takes up with the handsome contractor working on her editor's apartment, she finds an exhilarating though empty relationship that fuels her writing. Bailey's tale is snazzy, fun, and filled with likable characters worth rooting for. Kristine Huntley

5.0 out of 5 stars This one emerges from the crowd!, August 12, 2002
By
This review is from: Party Girls (Paperback)
When I first started reading Chick Lit, it was tough to find what my "next read" would be. Now, it seems like 10 new ones are published every day, and they are getting shorter and shorter, and it is becoming more difficult to get past the first chapter. Party Girls jumped out at me because of the cover artwork and because of its thickness. It is a good, meaty read that lets you get into some character development other than "I'm single and I'm doing the dating scene in New York City." You get a good sense of what each character is like, and by the end, they all have a few changes to their personalities or morals. I was able to envision where they lived and how they were dressed, like a little movie in my head. I happened to be in a store in downtown Boston, and saw a girl and thought to myself "hmm, I bet that is just what Jade Cohen would look like." Party Girls gets a big nod from me, and I'm looking forward to Roz Bailey's next book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Chick Lit!, November 10, 2002
This review is from: Party Girls (Paperback)
Having read nothing but dark and poignant books lately, I decided to indulge in my favorite guilty pleasure: a chick lit. And what a great chick novel Party Girls is too! Reading about three thirty-something Manhattanites' struggles with love, careers, cocktail bars and real estate was quite enjoyable. Roz Bailey has created characters so believable that I hoped things worked out for them at the end. Sex and the City has got nothing on this gem! Are you in the bargain for great chick lit? Pick up Party Girls.
