1.0 out of 5 stars Welcome To Synth Hell
The producers stuck Anarchy in the UK up front, trying to delude the listener into believing that the rest of the listed bands are just as radical and memorable. Sorry, no. Its one droning, boring repetitive synth-beat band after another.

5.0 out of 5 stars Party People, April 20, 2004

This review is from: 24 Hour Party People [Music from the Motion Picture] (Audio CD)
The first part of the movie focuses on the band Joy Division and the history of Factory Records. While the movie featured several JD songs, we have the meat here: "Transmission" is their first great song, "New Dawn Fades" is them at their heaviest, "Atmosphere" is their most transcendent (although maybe some members were only concerned with the human sphere), "She's Lost Control" is their first great single and defined Manchester early on, and "Love Will Tear Us Apart" is their most famous song, and their only really positive song, since it contains emotion and the concept of love.

Manchester is known for its cold humor and lack of sentimentality. Right after lead singer Ian Curtis killed himself, they formed New Order, which became one of the most popular bands of the time. His death is the end of chapter one of the story. Soon Ecstasy and dance took hold. Where punk gave us a bleak vision of the world, almost post-nuclear, the rave scene, "Madchester" as it was called, combined rock, drugs and dance. This blueprint has survived to cyber raves down the road from you with Sasha & Digweed. The inclusion of New Order tracks that were more danceable, and A Guy Called Gerald, Happy Mondays, and 808 State are reminders who are the originators. I was 15 years old when Joy Division started and about 27 when "Pacific State" came out and when Happy Mondays collapsed, so this is like the soundtrack to my youth. There are some obscure bands like The Duritti Column represented, but lost are Magazine, The Fall, and A Certain Ratio, who figure more in the movie. But most of that is nit-picking. The movie is great. The soundtrack to the movie is better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Can't imagine a better compilation, February 28, 2004

I normally hate compilations. Hate the concept, hate the low-down commercial intent. BUT this is BRILLIANT. Even if you haven't seen the film, don't know who Tony Wilson is, don't know/care where Manchester is... just buy this compilation. It's a totally inspiring (and challenging) snapshot of an amazing period in British music. Other reviews have pointed out that it's not 'comprehensive' in that it's missing anything by the Stone Roses, but that's irrelevant when you have 18 amazing songs here.

I'm afraid Alfonso Lozada has missed the point. The film is about a span of time in the life of one person, Tony Wilson, and is thus structured around his experiences. At the same time, the film is not a documentary but a fictionalized account. On top of all this, the "Tony" character does mention the short shrift the Stone Roses get. Is it really a surprise to find the soundtrack album bereft of artists which did not appear in the film?

5.0 out of 5 stars AWSOME SOUNDTRACK TO AN AWESOME MOVIE!!!, August 16, 2002
By

This review is from: 24 Hour Party People [Music from the Motion Picture] (Audio CD)
No doubt about it...'24 Hour Party People' is not only one of the best soundtracks of the year, it is one of the best albums of the year!!! Expertly put together by Tony Wilson and UK DJ Pete Tong - 24 Hour Party People is a superb eclectic mix of styles and artists.

The Sex Pistols kick things off with 'Anarchy in the UK' and before you know it your ears have spent the next hour listening to Joy Division classics, New Order tracks old and new ( Love the new single 'Here To Stay'), Happy Mondays trippy dance rock, and dance classics from 808 State, Guy Called Gerald, and Marshall Jefferson.

Also thrown into the mix are the Buzzcocks, The Clash and a live version of 'New Dawn Fades' feat. Moby, New Order, Billy Corgan, and John Frusciante taped during last summer's AREA1 Tour. It pulls you in so many different directions; however, always seems to make absolute sense!

If like me you have seen the film, you have to admit that you wanted to hear this music as soon as you stepped foot outside the theatre. If you do not manage to catch this movie (and you should - think Trainspotting meets Spinal Tap)this is still a great album for any real music fan.

Madchester lives on!

This CD puts you in the thick of all that was good in Manchester late 70's to early 90's. Put it on and have a party.

The movie is really about the music and this disk has the music. It's that simple. See the movie, get the soundtrack.

4.0 out of 5 stars review for "24 Hour Party People", October 20, 2010

Enjoyable movie about the events leading up to the second "Summer of Love" in Manchester, UK. While a docudrama, anyone interested in the events that lead up to and included the rave culture that started in the UK will want to watch this and get a sense of those events. Well done in the docudrama sense, there could have been a bit more explanation of the backstory as well as the front story although as seen, it is entertaining. Watch this with the movies "Control" and "Joy Division" to immerse yourself in another historical nexus that The Man tried to quash...

4.0 out of 5 stars nice mix, December 2, 2008

If you've seen this movie and/or are into the manchester music scene or any kind of retro/punk/new wave this is a great cd for you. Most of the best songs and artists featured in this movie are present on this cd. It is worth mentioning that 'A Certain Ratio' is conspicuously absent after being featured and mentioned repeatedly in the film. I would've liked to have heard 1 or 2 tracks by ACR here.

5.0 out of 5 stars Timeless, and faultless, February 24, 2008

Now it has to be said that anyone with any passing interest in the punk and post punk scene will already have these songs among their CD and/or vinyl collections (and good on them). And when watched in conjunction with the film, 24-hour party people the CD has are obvious ommissions (The Jam, Siouxsie and the Banshees to name but two). Nonetheless this Factory inspired collection is nonetheless magnificent, which just like the film can be enjoyed again and again. The Joy Division classics fit nicely alongside, the Buzzcocks, and of course the Happy Mondays. Rare treats also include Moby's impassioned version of JD's 'New Dawn Fades'. I loved it and will continue to do so, but I'm also a fan. Fans of this should also check out the 'Control' soundtrack or 'Technique' from New Order if they haven't done so already.
