Karaoke background tracks?, March 20, 2002
This review is from: Party With Pride (Audio CD)
... I love creative cover songs, but these really aren't all that creative. For most of the songs, I think they just took Karaoke background music and recorded vocals. Granted, the vocals are decent and the production is decent...it doesn't sound like you're actually in the bar listening to the Karaoke! So that is good, but most basically sound like the originals...and so I'd rather play the original! Either give me a creative interpretation of the song, or just give me the original song....I don't really need to hear "Gaydar" sing Dancing Queen. (In fact, the best part of the album is the mock groups that supposedly performed these songs...Gaydar, Drew Blood, Boyz R Us, Sly Vester, Bronski B, Gloria Gaygirl...you get the idea! Never heard of any of them...I think they are just hired studio musicians.) None are the original recordings (they try to fool you by having some really close names...like Jimmy Summerville...who is not the fabulous Jimmy Somerville of Bronski Beat and Communards fame!) So, even at bargain basement prices, I think I'd say pass on this one! If you're looking for a good variety of gay retro music to play at a party, try the Soundtrack to Priscilla Queen of the Desert and Muriel's Wedding. For something more current, the American Queer as Folk soundtracks are great (haven't heard the British, but I imagine they are great too!)

Instant Party DJ!, November 28, 2000
This review is from: Party With Pride (Audio CD)
I was a bit hesitant about buying this as it is mostly cover versions but for the number of discs you cant go wrong! They are all great danceable tracks and have been a hit at my parties, in fact at the last one 2 of my friends bought the set the next day. So the next time you're having a party, pull out the changer and pop these babies in! You wont be disappointed!

Ain't nothing like the real thing baby, April 14, 2001
This review is from: Party With Pride (Audio CD)
Okay, I bought.... However boys though some of the singers do a commendable job with some of the songs, others murder the song to death. Examples of this would be Prince's 199 George michael's I want your sex and Lafreak sounds horrible. To be sure there are gems in here as well; "Sorry I'm a Lady is well done, "Yes Sir i can boogie" is another one I can listen to without feeling the need to press the skip button on my player. For the price you can't go wrong but don't expect great talent either. "in the Navey" is done all right but you know deep down there is something not right about the song which prevents you from really getting into it. Of course when the lads are around and the drinks start to flow nobody will be able to tell the difference but you do notice it when you are simply listening to them while doing housework. The best song on this whole six CD collection for me is "yellow polka-dot Bikini" It is really well done with a fast upbeat tempo which adds on to the original version. However i would rather pay ... and get the original versions of the songs listed here then ... and get a whole lot of bad singing; still if you alwys wanted to buy a box set here is your chance to get one and not spend a great deal of money; they are fun to listen to and you do grow use to them after a while but as the saying goes, ain't nothing like the real thing. mildly recommended.
