Book Description

6 and up1 and up
Ramadan is coming and Leena is excited. This will be the first year she will fast. Leena is too young to fast each day during the Muslim religious festival, so she decides to fast each Friday instead. Now Leena has a dilemma. She receives an invitation to a party which happens to fall on Friday. Leena doesn't want to miss the party, but she doesn't want to miss fasting either. So Leena decides to go to the party, but not eat or drink. Later, she will join her family for the meal known as iftar, when the daily fast is broken. But when Leena, who is the only Muslim at the party, sees her friends enjoying fresh lemonade and chocolate cake, her stomach starts to growl and her head begins to hurt. Will she keep her Ramadan fast? Asma Mobin-Uddin's charming story of a young Muslim girl determined to do the right thing is warmly illustrated by Laura Jacobsen.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

With lively pastel-and-pencil artwork, this warm picture book shows and tells the observance and meaning of Ramadan through the viewpoint of a Muslim child. Leena is happy to be invited to her friend’s birthday party, although it turns out that the event is on a day during Ramadan when Leena plans to fast with her family. She attends the party and has lots of fun, even though she does not eat or drink. It’s hard for her when everyone else eats chocolate cake, and a close-up picture shows her stress and exhaustion as she maintains her fast. Her loving dad offers support and tells her, “It’s not easy sometimes.” Finally the time comes to break her fast, and as she says the traditional Arabic prayers, she realizes what the day has taught her. The blend of the upbeat and challenging moments will spark discussion, and a final note fills in more about the holy month. Grades 1-3. --Hazel Rochman

Review

Although message-driven, this is a compassionate family story that functions beautifully as both mirror for Muslim-American children and window for their non-Muslim friends. The author's appealing, full-bleed pastels depict a sunny, middle-class community. A worthwhile addition to the still-too-sparse literature for children about Muslim-Americans. --Kirkus Reviews

The author takes a realistic situation and addresses it in such a manner that those not familiar with Ramadan will have a better understanding of the holy month. The illustrations are rendered in pastel pencil and the illustrator makes effective use of facial expressions. An author's note provides additional information about Ramadan and the headscarf worn by Muslim females. --Library Media Connection

5.0 out of 5 stars A Classic, September 30, 2010

This review is from: A Party in Ramadan (Hardcover)
One of the best picture books for/about Muslim children. I have given copies of this book to friends, family and my children's school library.

Thorough, evocative, typical of the Ramadan observances of millions of Muslims.

The story is well-crafted and the illustrations are very well done.

The book will appeal to a broad audience.

(Note: I recommend "Party in Ramadan" over Asma Mobinuddin's "The Best Eid Ever". That other one requires a little bit more familiarity with Muslim cultures and observances, and it assumes the reader will have those insights ready at hand, which someone new to this kind of story will definitely not.)

Party in Ramadan is an instant "Muslim-Classic". Enjoy.

The book is a story about a muslim girl who wants to attend her non-muslim-friend's birthday party the first day of Ramadan. It highlights respect for people's differences and beliefs. I find it more suitable for kids 8 years old and older as they will be able to relate, but my 5 years old still enjoyed it.

5.0 out of 5 stars interesting and informative, August 23, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: A Party in Ramadan (Hardcover)
This is a book that can be read just because it's a good story, and/or because it informative about something important in a Muslim child's life, and/or because it contains a good lesson about sharing and respecting the dignity of the poor. If you read it for all three reasons, you'll be glad you did, and so will your children.
