Editorial Reviews

The official party purveyor of New Orleans, Kermit Ruffins, is at it again with his new CD 'We Partyin' Traditional Style.' An intriguing collection of Jazz standards put through the good times grinder by the King of Treme himself, 'We Partyin' Traditional Style' is a rare glimpse into the influences that inspired Ruffins while a youthful New Orleans street busker working toward international celebrity.
Pulling classics from the 20th Century like fedoras from his collection, Ruffins' playful nature breathes new life into versions of 'Exactly Like you' and 'Jeepers Creepers.' With more than a little help from veteran jazzmen like Lucien Barbarin and Shannon Powell (both previously sidemen for Harry Connick, Jr.) Ruffins delivers with a sharp musical elegance, one that would certainly make his progenitors tip their hat.
Boasting a honed raspiness all his own, Ruffins' take on Louis Armstrong's 'When It's Sleepy Time Down South' serves as a calm prelude to his rollicking original, 'Treme Second Line.'
The always triumphant 'When the Saints Go Marching In' finalizes the record along with any doubt that, with his new release, Ruffins gracefully channels the glory of the roaring 20s through the standard of celebration that is life in the Big Easy.
But he may just tell you, 'WE PARTYIN'!'

If, like me, you a a fan of the HBO series TREME, you surely have seen NOLa trumpet player Kermit Ruffins. Nearly episode shows him playing one of his weekly Thursday night gigs at Vaughn's Lounge (he's at the Blue Nile on Fridays, Bullet's on Tuesdays and his own Kermit's Treme Speakeasy on Sundays and Mondays!) or he is cooking his world famous BBQ with his portable operation. He rarely ventures away from the Crescent City but I was fortunate enough to see him in Philly a few years ago. His previous Cds on the independent Basin Street Records label are in my collection and this newest one is just as good.

Of the 11 songs on the 55-minute party-fest, all are standards save one - "Treme Second Line", composed by Ruffins. The rest include many hits by Louis Armstrong (who Ruffins emulates in many way): "When The Saints Go Marchin' In", "Jeepers Creepers" and Armstrong's theme song "When It's Sleepy Time Down South". Like "Pops", Ruffins sings the vocals and then takes solo breaks. The band he has backing him are all well-honed NOLa musicians, including Don Vappie on banjo and Shannon Powell on drums. The sound is crisp and clear - and the band sounds like they are having lots of fun - with Powell's drumsticks coming through crisp and clear.

The packaging is a basic digi-pak with song titles and credits and a short set of "thank you"s by Ruffins. But in that case, who cares? It's all about the music on the disc and it is wonderful. This Kermit is not green and lives by a Lake (Ponchartrain), not a pond but he's just as entertaining or even more.

I hope you found this review both informative and helpful.

This is a great example of e traditional style of New Orleans jazz so beautifully performed by Kermit Ruffins. A bit more raucous than some of his other CDs, this is a disc you will find infectiously joyful!
