This is a fitting reference read for those looking for balance to Hare's Without Conscience: The Disturbing World of the Psychopaths Among Us and Ronson's The Psychopath Test: A Journey Through the Madness Industry. The broadly used PCL-R, developed by Hare, is a diagnostic interview protocol used to test prison inmates for existence and intensity of 20 key symptoms of psychopathy, each on a zero to two scale, with a possible total score of zero to 40. The author states that a score of 30 in the United States, 25 in Canada, results in a psychopathy diagnosis that could stand in the way of release.

According to the author, the general prison population scores around 23, and tests administered by trained professionals can range as much as six points in final score. So, it could be a close call. The PCL-R is designed to be administered and evaluated by a psychiatrist trained specifically in this matter, but that interviewer must rely heavily upon historical documentation and notes about current behavior recorded by others -- many of whom are non-professionals, but are conversant with the factors that influence the scoring of symptoms, and clearly none of whom can be expected to be an inmate's advocate.

Personal efforts to develop the day-to-day skills required for survival in penitentiary could be interpreted as high-scoring (adverse) behaviors. The book emphasizes recall, if not development, of pre-incarceration personal stories expressing positive life experiences to provide interview counterweight to the documentation in the inmate's file.

I kinda want to believe that this book was written for incarcerated people who might actually deserve another chance at society and aren't actually psychopaths. But it really does leave you with the impression that some psychopathic personalities could read this and trick the psychologist who's responsible to offering an assessment of their character to whatever prison board a person might face.

Thing is, just because a person can legally present themselves as a psychologist, that doesn't automatically mean they're good at character diagnostics. And I feel a well educated psychologist with really good diagnostic abilities could see through a person's fake presentation of self after reading this book.

On another note, if you're only interested this book because your trying to study or learn about psychopathy, then I don't feel this book would be worth your time and money. If anything, it might influence your ability to see a person's "mask of sanity" when it's presented to you, but I feel there are plenty other books available that are better suited for teaching readers about psychopathy.

Great book, whether you're reading it to pass the test or learn more about psychopathy. I'm of the latter, so it did help me get into the head of a psychopath by reading advice given to them about what not to do. Interesting yet easy read. Pick it up if you ever think you may be heading to prison!

Who would help a psychopath? Well for 80.00 perhaps another psychopath. Or someone who has never had his own life torn apart by one. Or had his child abused by one, or lost everything to one. I got especially sick when I saw the post from the mother who enabled her son-- psychopaths have no loyalty so one day she may meet destiny. My prayers are with her... or perhaps "her post" is really the the work of the author to give his work some credibility.

Psychopaths ruin the lives of those around them and are a bane on humanity. It is only in my dealings with psychopaths that I found this book here on Amazon, and I must say that I am appalled. The purpose of this book is to help psychopaths regain access to society where they will continue with their lying, manipulative, callous, unfeeling ways. That is a shame. Do not buy this book for someone to "help" them.
