Wrong answer provided to Civics Exam question,
By socalblue (San Diego, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Pass the U.S. Citizenship Exam (Paperback)
This book could receive high ratings, however there can be no excusing such basic editing carelessness resulting in what will mislead many citizenship applicants, and conceivably result in some of them failing their test.
On page 100, for question 52. When was the Constitution written? the answer is given as 1776. 1776 was the date of the Declaration of Independence, not the Constitution. Obviously this is wrong, the correct year is 1787.

one of the few books I found to help study for 2008 test. Have bought one through Amazon and recommended to another person that bought at retail store. It was exactly what was tested. It's another story when it comes to some of the folks at USCIS and the whole naturalization process...

This is currently the only book on the market to adequately cover the 2008 revised citizenship exam. I've used it with my ESL literacy student and recently purchased a second copy for another ESL student. But in my limited experience, applying for citizenship requires filling out a great deal of paperwork, and no book on the planet makes that easy for a low-literacy immigrant or refugee. Many low-literacy applicants will still need professional help to work their way through the process. That's my criticism of the government and not a knock on this book.

I am using this book to teach Citizenship class to US residents who want to become citizens. It is written is simple, basic English. It covers all the possible questions on the citizenship exam and includes sufficient practice exercises and a review section.
My current student likes this book but I find it to be a bit basic and simple. It does not provide much explanation or background, but is appropriate for those who are interested in passing the exam and who speak beginner-level English. I don't recommend it if your student (or you) want more background knowledge about US government or for more intellectual students who want more in-depth info about US civics and history.

Understandable and well organized. Takes you step-by-step through what you need to know as a U.S.Citizen. Read and learn and you will know more about your new country than most who are born here !

Out-of-Date; the Current Test was Redesigned AFTER this Book,
This review is from: Pass the U.S. Citizenship Exam (Paperback)
This book is out of print for a reason. The Citizenship Test was redesigned at the end of 2008
If you're preparing fo rnaturalization, you should study with the new materials, the current USCIS questions, not these old ones. Practice with the current required information, noti, not ones from before 1009. Get study guides that are up-to-date and will really help you pass the test, not this.

Too Much Superfluous Information,
By artlover11 "artlover11" (Columbus, OH) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Pass the U.S. Citizenship Exam (Paperback)
I have taught English to adult immigrants for 2.5 years. One of my students never learned to read or write in his native language (Arabic), so he had to really apply himself in order to learn how to read and write all of the required English words for the citizenship test.
I bought this book thinking that it would guide my teaching process, but I found it loaded with information that was not relevant to the exam. Certainly, the information it contains is excellent knowledge that every American should possess, but if English is a challenge for you, and you need to focus solely on passing the test, this book may seem confusing and overwhelming. As another reviewer mentioned, the questions are not all accurate. The Constitution was written in 1787, not 1776 as is listed in this book. The test does not ask you to know "In what month is the president inaugurated." Also, the test wants you to name THREE of the original 13 colonies, not one as the book says. I take issue with the fact that the book does not list all the answers that the USCIS lists on its flash cards. This book is only 151 pages, and I'm sure they could have added a few pages to list things like all the states that border Canada or all the national holidays. I recommend Googling "Study Materials for the Naturalization Test" and going to the USCIS website, where they provide you with the correct 100 questions you need to memorize (as well as flash cards you can print out and use to study from) and the lists of all the words you need to know how to read and write. I also suggest that you ask a native English speaker to ask you the 100 questions. Even though you may know the answers to the questions as they sound in your head, that can be quite different from how they will sound coming out of an American's mouth. This book did earn one star because it has questions about the application portion of the interview. I found this to be invaluable to use when practicing with my student. |
