Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

The title Passage of Time could refer to the eight-year gap between Liz Callaway's 2009 solo album and her previous solo album, The Beat Goes On, from a time when she was a cornerstone of producer Bruce Kimmel's Broadway-themed albums at Varese Sarabande and Fynsworth Alley. But it could also refer to the natural maturation of the golden-voiced star and the inevitable changes in her life and family. The latter implication is revealed in some of her song choices, such as Stephen Sondheim's "Children Will Listen," Dave Grusin and Alan and Marilyn Bergman's "A Child Is Born," and a pair of Andrew Lloyd Webber songs: "The Perfect Year" from Sunset Boulevard and "Memory" from Cats, which memorializes the role Callaway occupied as probably the third-most-famous Grizabella, after Elaine Paige and Betty Buckley. Callaway's sister, jazz chanteuse Ann Hampton Callaway, also appears in the duet "That's the Way I've Always Heard It Should Be" (Liz sings "Not That Girl" here, leading one to imagine how well-suited another song from Wicked, "For Good," would have been for the sisters). There may be no "Meadowlark" here, but Callaway's soprano sounds as pure as ever on Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens' "Nothing to Lose (But Your Heart)" and Sondheim's "Being Alive," and she's in the best of hands with director-arranger Alex Rybeck and producer Tommy Krasker. We can only hope that her next project will be not so long in the making. --David Horiuchi

Product Description

Liz Callaway, who landed her first Broadway starring role at the age of 22 in the Maltby-Shire musical Baby, returns with her first solo album in eight years. This new collection, which ranges from standards to contemporary fare, reveals an actress who has lived a rich life both on and off stage. Liz transforms classics like 'Something Wonderful' and 'Make Someone Happy' into personal songs of depth and perspective, then uncovers new meaning in Stephen Schwartz's 'I'm Not That Girl,' in which a young woman tastes the bitterness of unrequited love, by pairing it with John Bucchino's song of self-preservation 'Just Another Face.' Returning to Baby, she inhabits the quiet anguish of 'Patterns;' revisiting Cats, she offers up a definitive performance of 'Memory,' giving new life to the classic song. In addition to songs from the stage, Callaway is joined by her sister, the accomplished jazz singer Ann Hampton Callaway, for Carly Simon's anthem to the distant thunder of married life, 'That's the Way I've Always Heard It Should Be.' With this rewarding series of songs, Liz reveals herself not only as one of Broadway's timeless voices, but as an artist who continues to experience and celebrate the Passage of Time.

5.0 out of 5 stars How does she do this?, December 3, 2009
This review is from: Passage of Time (Audio CD)
Liz is an unbelievable talent. Her voice is so clear and soothing. She really tells the story in her songs and you feel the thoughts and message she conveys in each number. When I am down, I just listen to Make Someone Happy/Something Wonderful and Raindrops/Singing in the rain. It always makes the day better. This album is terrific! Also, a song not to miss which is on a different album, is Scott Alan's Goodnight. Liz is in top form and brings a tear to my eye every time I listen to it. She is simply a gem!

4.0 out of 5 stars Well done, Liz., October 26, 2009

I've always been a huge fan of Liz Callaway, have all of her albums, and have searched in vain for a long time, hoping for a new cd. So I was thrilled when I saw this one on Amazon.

I enjoyed this album very much, but for some reason wanted more. I guess some of the songs seem uninspired. However, that is just me. Her voice is perfection, as always, and most of the performances are dead on. If you're a fan, than you must have this album. It's definitely worth owning and listening to repeatedly.

5.0 out of 5 stars BEAUTIFUL recording!, December 3, 2010
This review is from: Passage of Time (Audio CD)
If you already know Liz Callaway, you know she is a marvelous singer, with a pure, versatile way of singing. This collection is so beautifully arranged, with intelligent pairings that enhance the songs involved ("Make Someone Happy/Something Wonderful"; "I'm Not That Girl/Just Another Face"; "Raindrops Keep Fallin'/Singin' in the Rain"; "The Perfect Year/Memory"), and a glorious duet with Liz's sister Ann Hampton Callaway. I was going to write more, but I've got no time and, really, every cut is just fantastic, all infused with that characteristic ps classics excellent quality. GET this!
