5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, icy, atmospheric dreampop with an edge June 6, 2012
Format:Audio CD
The debut full-length release from this Brooklyn band is a huge leap forward from last year's EP.
"Passage" exudes an icy atmospheric beauty that manifests a tantalizingly moody enchantment,
holding the listener with a hauntingly mystic grip. Softly flowing electronic dreampop refrains
give way to powerful, explosive bursts of celestial flutter-noise--all held together by the stunning,
sometimes lovely, sometimes creepy vocals of Aleksa Palladino. This is an album of immense
depth and substance; with a bold, soaring grandiose dreamscape feel that will leave you wide-
eyed and breathless. Sometimes recalls Beach House, Cocteau Twins, EMA, Sigur Ros, The
Twilight Sad. Really exceptional, one of 2012's best so far.

4.0 out of 5 stars Funereal, Atmospheric, and Jagged June 19, 2012
Format:Audio CD
I first came across Exitmusic through their nice rendition of David Bowie's "Space Oddity." The duo is composed of husband and wife team Aleksa Palladino (actress of Boardwalk Empire fame) & Devon Church. The band's first full-length album, PASSAGE, is a trip through spacey atmospheres and crystallized percussion. The best way to describe this band is perhaps by comparing Exitmusic to others; their music sounds like Sigur Ros covering music by Beach House. It's partly dream-pop, partly distorted electronics, and partly psychedelic alternative.

The excellent title track "Passage" serves as the introduction to the album, and it gives a good indication of what follows - soaring vocals over raw guitar, all punctuated by cymbal crashes. The song is packed with an explosive chorus that reminds me of Sigur Ros's final track on "( )". Exitmusic makes great use of dynamics; they make the most out of their time by lying low in quiet soundscapes and disrupting them with equally beautiful distortion. "The Modern Age" might have the most conventional melody, and it serves a strangely tangible track compared to the rest. PASSAGE feels like the score to an experimental movie; it conjures great, vivid images. It's a good album to close your eyes in a dark room and get lost in. The album is concluded by the wonderful "Sparks of Light," ending PASSAGE on one of its best songs.

PASSAGE isn't an album for everyone, but I think that those listeners who enjoy the aforementioned Beach House or Sigur Ros will really like Exitmusic's latest. Standout tracks: "Passage," "The City," and "Sparks of Light." This has been one of my favorite listens of 2012. Give it a chance.

Pretty good stuff here. A good album to play while you're at work. Nice feel to it. Sort of like a Sigur Ros album.
