3.0 out of 5 stars Compared to Week-by-Week, July 13, 2011

This review is from: Hi/lo Passages To Build Reading Comprehension Grades 5-6: 25 High-Interest/Low Readability Fiction and Nonfiction Passages to Help Struggling Readers Build Comprehension and Test-Taking Skills (Paperback)
My son struggle a little with reading comprehension at the end of fourth grade, so I bought him this book and WEEK-BY-WEEK HOMEWORK FOR BUILDING to practice reading comprehension over the break. Of the two books, I prefer "Week-by-Week", because it provides the parent and child with more guidance on how to improve comprehension: focus on italicized words, read around difficult words, etc. Each reading exercise concentrates on one skill.

"Hi-Lo" is basically a collection of interesting stories with a few questions at the end. Although the questions do focus on a certain skill, like determining cause and effect, the student is offered no guidance on how to determine it. The parents are given no guidance on how to teach it.

Another problem is many stories only have three questions at the end. Oftentimes, they are multiple choice. My son could guess the answer and be done with it. The "Week-by-Week" book requires more thought. If I could only buy one book, I'd buy "Week-by-Week."
