Stretch Records presents Steve Wilson (alto & soprano sax, flute) featuring Bruce Barth (piano), Adam Cruz (drums & percussion), Ed Howard (bass)with special guest Nicholas Payton (trumpet & flugelhorn) in a jazz extravaganza. From the opening track - "TURNIN' THE CORNER" to the very last "WILSONIAN'S GRAIN (REPRISE)" this album is on a "pure groove road" to jazz at it's finest. All selections were composed by Mr. Wilson except "DAYS AND NIGHTS WAITING" (Keith Jarrett) and "THE LEXTER" (Bruce Barth), each with a great sound and beat totally original.

"Every musical episode, every collaboration, every releationship is a passage. It is about our growth as a human race, and evolution as spiritual beings. This music embodies our collective and individual journeys. May your passages be filled with many blessings", this inspirational quote is from the liner notes by Steve Wilson.

Highly recommend this lifting the spirits album to all collectors of fine jazz. This CD has strength and enlightenment as we make our way everyday, through the "Passages"!

Leader Steve Wilson plays saxophones (alto and soprano) and flute on this recording, accompanied by a band that includes Bruce Barth on keyboards, Ed Howard on bass, and Adam Cruz on drums and percussion; in addition, trumpeter Nicholas Payton joins in on three cuts, and these are the highlights of the recording. Most of the cuts on the album were composed by Wilson, with one cut composed by pianist Barth and one by Keith Jarrett. Overall, this is one of those CDs that is enjoyable, but not really memorable. Had Payton played throughout, this would have been a dynamite recording, but then it would not really have been a Steve Wilson recording.

Still, despite my ultimate lack of enthusiasm, I must say that Passages is a very good recording that showcases a young talent with a promising future. Keep an eye out for Steve Wilson, who may well make some great recordings in the future. This one's pretty good, but not great.
