5.0 out of 5 stars Very funny!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love this movie. The brother in this movie is an idiot. What kind of a person throws a recent heart attack victim a surprise party!?!?!?! Tim Curry is not to be missed! His infamous "Cat-suit grope" scene is worth the price!!! I highly recommend this!!!

To Some~ This Movie may not be a Comedy of Comedy's, but "It Was Good For A Laugh~!" and "I liked it!", because it was 'FUNNY', Black or Not~? it had hilarious aspects that some Families experience when one of their relatives has "Passed Away"~ and it had some 'Truisms' that could be considered "Black" for some, but shouldn't be in Today's Society. Having been in the Funeral business some years ago, I've seen ~'Things Happen'~ and maybe some weren't Funny at the Time, but Later everyone Laughed~ This Movie makes you smile & Laugh Today and Tommorow~! Life's to Short not to~! "If you want nudity, sex or violence, your in the Wrong Seat", Butt If you Like to Laugh~! Then Watch, rent or Buy "Passed Away" Today @ Amazon~ "!=="IT IS GOOD FOR A LAUGH~!" :~)

This movie had me laughing out loud! A truly crazy family made up of siblings Bob Hoskins (the oldest, experiencing a midlife crisis), Frances McDormand (the rebel nun), William Petersen (pretty boy attempting to fill his father's shoes) and Pamela Reed (divorced but not telling the family) reunite for the funeral of their father. Each brings (and wrestles with ) their own insanity at the funeral. You will find at least one character that mimics someone from your own family. Silly, slightly controversial, and downright hysterical in moments. You will laugh and you will identify with this loony tune bunch. Peter Riegert is wonderful as is Nancy Travis and Maureen Stapleton; in fact the entire cast is great. A comedy that should be seen at least once.

Like the movie "Parenthood" which is directed by Ron Howard, this movie is also painfully true to life. Johnny is a lost hero. An everyday hero making some wrong choices but in the end making THEE right choice which is why "you always end up in the right place, but you make getting there so interesting". And that's what this move is. An interesting, funny trip through one families insanity.

5.0 out of 5 stars if Odets could write comedy, August 31, 2006

William Peterson's showcase performance as a sympathetic prototype of Dan Quayle proves that, long before CSI, he was capable of complex subtlety and timing. This ensemble piece does well with the "eccentric family" genre, and can be thanked in passing for featuring a human but non-degenerate priest--a rarity in movies for decades now.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wit and wisdom, April 20, 2004
This review is from: Passed Away [VHS] (VHS Tape)
An excellent script, graced by first rate performers. This movie is much more than a comedy: it's almost a mirror. It makes you reflect on the pathetic black comedy family life -and human condition- usually is. I only wish it was already available on DVD...
