Review

...I find myself more confident when ordering and can avoid those regrettable touristy restaurants that you sometimes go to just because they provide English menus. It is so useful. --excerpt of a review of Passeport Gastronomique: France

..a foreign menu can be a miserable experience. A basic translation error could mean the difference between ordering a steak, or a plate full of fried lamb intestines.
Thankfully, there is Passeport Gastronomique

Product Description

Newly Revised 2nd Edition! NOW with Vegan and Vegetarian helpful phrases!!

Buon Appetito! This guide to Italian dining is an Italian menu translator, phrasebook and pronunciation guide.

Passeport Gastronomique: Italy is invaluable to both the adventurous and cautious diner. It helps you search out (or avoid) favorites and unusual dishes. If cured hog jowl or fried frogs are not your cup of tea, be sure not to order the Guanciale or rane fritte on the menu! 100s of Italian menu items listed alphabetically and indexed and translated into English.

Know What You Eat!

This from Robin Locker Lacey at MyMelange.net

By now you know that I'm a traveling foodie. But that doesn't always mean that I the most adventurous eater.

In fact, there is a limit to what I will eat (no brains, intestines, testicles or eyeballs for me!) even if it is considered a delicacy. Not really into snails either.

I always like to arm myself with correct menu translations so that I can avoid any unpleasant foods while traveling. No embarrassing culinary mishaps for me thankyouverymuch.

Up to this point, I have always recommended the Marling Menu-Master, which is certainly a great resource.

But now, with the magic of modern technology, there is a new eBook on the scene that would give you the same result, but in a new downloadable format.

Passeport Gastronomique offers foreign menu language translations for France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Portugal, Sweden and The Netherlands- and even a few combo editions.

It's a great way to get the info and security, but at a fraction of the cost (under $10) - and with the ease of having it on your Smartphone or eReader - it means never having to pack or carry around a bulky guidebook. And never having to wonder which of the cow's stomachs you just ate.

Do you remember a time that you wished you had a menu translator?

Looking for the same, great Menu Translator without the phrasebook or pronunciation guide, try our Menus(e)! series as an alternative. Search on Menuse in the Kindle Store on Amazon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Longing for great Italian food?, July 30, 2010
This review is from: Passeport Gastronomique: Italy (Kindle Edition)
Missing our annual Italian summer eating extravaganza, I decided to take my Passeport Gastronomique to Il Casale in Belmont, MA and pretend that we were in Italy. Anxious to know what I might look forward to that evening, I went on the website and perused the menu. Not having a waiter nearby to ask for a translation, I used my PG to decipher the meanings of sauces and words that looked familiar and I thought I should already know, but didn't. It was great! I especially like the fact that it is not just main ingredients that are defined, but phrases such as "sweet and sour." This feature shedds considerable light on the menu selections. My PG contributed to a lovely meal and was fun to use. I know that it will be extremely helpful when faced with the challenge of an all Italian menu and no one around to translate. I plan to buy the Spanish version for our next trip to a Spanish speaking country. Terrific idea and so much more hip than traveling with a dictionary!

2.0 out of 5 stars Not Very Useful in Italy, August 30, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Passeport Gastronomique: Italy (Kindle Edition)
I bought the Kindle version before a trip to Italy, hoping to look a bit less foolish when ordering from Italian restaurant menus. The book looked pretty comprehensive, and it does have a useful list of Italian phrases inside. However, almost every time I tried to find a word or phrase in this book, it wasn't there. Used the Kindle search feature, nothing. Maybe I just had bad luck with the restaurants I visited, but I was not able to use this book at all on the trip. Perhaps it would be useful to someone taking an Italian cooking class?
