Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In this much-improved sequel to Riding Through Shadows, Foster gives her loyal evangelical Christian audience glimpses of African-American life, faith and romance that helped forge her reputation in Passing by Samaria and Ain't No River. Shirley Ferris-Mills and her two children shake the red clay dust of Alabama off their feet and head for California, where the widowed Shirley hopes to craft a new life. They detour to Tyler, Tex., to drop off Windy, a pregnant white teenage shoplifter they picked up along the way, and to visit Mother Johnson, who cared for Shirley as a child. Shirley's old prom date, Tony Taylor, soon discovers she's in town, and romance seems imminent. But first, Shirley must make peace with her past, which sends her on yet another quest. "It could be, baby, that what's going on in your life now is less about starting over than it is about finishing the race that you've started to run," says the wise Mother Johnson. There are some significant improvements over the novel's predecessor: the dark demonic angel is gone, and with the exception of some flashbacks, the time frame remains firmly in the present, creating a smoother read. A few structural troubles continue to dog the Christy Award-winning Foster, who includes some preachy passages and problematic names. However, this novel generally offers the good writing and wise insights Foster is known for, and her fans will enjoy this story of love, prayer, and healing.

5.0 out of 5 stars I needed this!!!, April 19, 2003
By
This review is from: Passing into Light (Paperback)
"Passing into Light", finally wrapped all the questions the I had after "Riding throught Shadows." I found myself so enthralled that I couldn't believe that it ended. Shirley the little girl is all alone in the world being attacked spirtiually, emotionally, and physically. I know as a girl I felt that way. This book opened my eyes to the spirit world, much like J.R.R. Tolkeins "Lord of the Rings." Passing into Light teaches through theses characters how to overcome your circumstances, and reclaim your life. God truly spoke through this author, Sharol Ewell Foster.

5.0 out of 5 stars A truly inspring read!, March 17, 2004
This review is from: Passing into Light (Paperback)
In the fourth title published by Multnomah, readers that enjoyed Essence bestseller, Riding Through the Shadows, will enjoy this sequel - delving deeper into humorous, wise characters like Mother, Ma Dear and Tony Taylor.
When Shirley picks up a hitchhiker, a white teenage "PK" from her home- town, she doesn't know that this youth would be the tool God would use to chip away at her dreary dark past and help her enter into the bright future filled with light. Engaging from beginning to end, author Ewell Foster wraps the gospel message in her work without being preachy. You get the usual warm, well-crafted witty characters from her plus a surprise ending - and always implanting an eternal message.

If you're looking for down-to-earth folks with everyday problems and a shore nuff God, then here you are. As always, Ms. Foster warms the hearts and lifts the spirits of her readers with this tale of returning, rebuilding and restoring. When the last page is turned, you'll know that God will restore all the locust has stolen. Everything.
