I read Kyra Davis' first book, Sex, Murder, and a Double Latte and thought it was great fun, but I have to say her second outing with her irreverent protagonist, Sophie Katz, is even more of a delight. Sophie's neurotic, but delightful sister, Leah, takes a leading role in this one (she made a briefer appearance in the first) and she and her slightly demonic toddler, Jack, add a lot to the narrative. Anyway I devoured Passion, Betrayal and Killer Highlights quickly. It was a tasty treat.

This book was an adventure from start to finish. Sophie, the main character, is a cool person with a cool life. She is witty and smart. She and her cat live in her apartment in San Fransisco. Sophie has a sister, Leah, and a nephew, Jack.
There are murder(s), but I will not say who, because I don't want to ruin it. But I will say that Sophie and Leah and Anatoly (Sophie's friend) are determined to solve the mystery. And solving the mystery takes you on some very interesting adventures. There are several important things that happen, and they all tie in together. The book is hard to put down. The characters are so well developed, you feel like you know them personally. I don't want to say anything more, as to not ruin the book. But I will tell you that Sophie is clever and spunky. And she likes frappucinos. And I will tell you that this book is fantastic. The whole book is good, and the ending is satisfying. I ended the book thinking 'this book was fulfilling and clever'.

I really did enjoy reading Kyra Davis's second installment to the Sophie crime drama. Miss Davis has great writing skills, not to keep you bored. I would recommend the reading of this book.

To do justice to this second Sophie Katz novel/sequel, I really think you need to read Sex, Murder and a Double Latte first. Otherwise, the characters might seem lacking, some of the incidents mentioned might seem extraneous, and some references might simply be missed.
With this novel I was eagerly anticipating the continuation of the stories begun in Sex, Murder and a Double Latte, and I was not disappointed. This novel picks up the storyline right where the first left off and further develops some key relationships/characters. This second novel seemed slower (especially the first half), less zany, more serious, and a bit deeper than the first. It was also missing some of the first novel's fun repartee between Sophie and Anatoly, her Russian Jewish love interest. Nonetheless, this book was still a quick, light, easy read with a few laugh-out-loud moments. As a Chinese American woman with bi-racial children, I appreciated the heightened (relative to the first novel) race/culture element and the addition of more characters of color in the story. It made the story feel more like a true San Francisco Bay Area story.

A Real Highlight!,
This review is from: Passion, Betrayal and Killer Highlights (Hardcover)
I also read the first Sophie Katz mystery and enjoyed it, but it didn't hold a candle to the sequel. I just LOVED the plot, the characters and Sophie's never-ending sarcasm. The murdered, philandering husband aspect kept me rapt and sympathetic to Leah, while always wondering if she was in fact the murderer. I felt it was better-written and less forced than "Sex, Murder and a Double Latte." Davis is really coming into her own and nailing down her charming personal style. Can't wait for the next one!

I'm always looking for new authors to read, and Kyra Davis fit the bill.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, as well as her others on this series. I hope she continues writing these. There is your basic murder mystery form, but with some interesting twists. Good read for a relaxing night.

This is the 2nd in a series and I enjoyed it more than the first because the murders weren't as grissly..well ok at least they didn't seem to be a crazy stalker like in the first. Her icky brother in law is dead and her sister leah is the main suspect so she hires the guy she thought was the murdered in the last book to help clear her sister. In this one she deals with her 18 month old nephew, Jack, and the other characters from her first book aren't seen as much and new characthers are introduced or seen more. I wish Marcus had been in this one more since he's one of my faves from the first. there were really funny, silly things in this one but if you're bugged by something serious being joked about and dingbat kind of stuff you wont' like this one. a few times this sorta got to me...Leah's husband is dead yet she's out dying her hair and worrying about what colors she should be wearing and doesn't want her h usband's mistress to speak at the funeral so she won't have to 'share the spotlight'..geez...her sister is made to be almost as stupid as mary ann at times in this one. I read it as a light funny read and e njoyed it...not a serious one!

Kyra Davis is an amazing author. Her writing is funny and inteligent and her characters will remind you of your best friends. I couldn't put it down and I highly reccommend her other books, including the latest "So Much for My Happy Ending."

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! If was a bright, funny mystery novel featuring half black-half Jewish mystery writer Sophie Katz. Her wanna be Martha Stewart sister, Leah is accused of the murder of her husband Bob.
But Sophie is convinced of Leah's innocence. She hires the handsome Russian PI Anatoly to help investigate Bob's murder. The two of them uncover facts about Bob's double life and the two of them get closer together as well. Like I said, this book was fun. I loved the characterizations of the two sisters, Sophie to coffee addict and Leah the wanna be perfect wife whose idols are Martha Stewart and Emily Post. This is chick-lit mystery done right. |
