Original Songs Inspired by the Passion, September 1, 2004
This review is from: Passion of the Christ: Songs (Original Songs Inspired by the Film) (Audio CD)
The CD is 12 songs inspired by the Passion of the Christ movie. These artists wrote their songs *after* they saw the movie (unlike the other "passion inspired" album out there) to reflect their feelings and reflections brought on by this amazing experience.
This is a CD of great variety. Those of you with appreciation for different musical styles will be surprised at how many genres they put together and how well they did it. There are songs from several different music genres: Rock, Adult Contemporary (inc. Country), and Urban. You can have an advance listen at their web site at http://www.passionsongs.com There are artists from both Christian and mainstream markets. Great stuff!
The Rock tunes vary in style and intensity within the genre. "The Empire" by MXPX and Mark Hoppus from Blink182 is terrific. POD is there too with their latest hit, "Truly Amazing". It's a metaphorical exploration of the "love for the fallen" shown so dramatically in the Passion film.
Pop/Country music lovers will really be touched by a Brad Paisley and Sara Evans' duet of a touching dialog between Jesus and Mary on the cross. It makes me cry every time! A relatively new band Big Dismal, perform "Rainy Day". It's a bit country, a lot contemporary Christian.
Urban fans will love How Many Lashes, by Kirk Franklin and Yolanda Adams, a tight journal-like reflection with a great edge. Lauryn Hill contributes a heavily syncopated R&B tune that I found invited me into a place of deep contemplation while listening to it. Very cool! Definitely a groove with a purpose! The BeBE Winans' tune adds some great Gospel to the Urban mix.
There's all this and more! Buy it!

"JUST AS I HAVE LOVED YOU, SO LOVE ONE ANOTHER.", September 2, 2004
This review is from: Passion of the Christ: Songs (Original Songs Inspired by the Film) (Audio CD)
"The Passion of the Christ - Songs" is a fine collection of great songs, each in their own way a reaction to the spectacular film that Mel Gibson has created. The standouts are the song "I See Love" by Steven Curtis Chapman, Third Day an MercyMe; Scott Stapp's powerful solo debut song "Relearn Love;" "Rainy Day" by Big Dismal, and the emotional "New Again" by Brad Paisley and Sarah Evans. Despite a couple of songs that don't reach their true potential ("The Passion," and "How Many Lashes"), this is a fine CD that belongs in anyone's and everyone's Christian music collection. Grade: A-
