5 of 5 people found the following review helpful By Sid Nuncius TOP 100 REVIEWER on March 18, 2011
Format: Audio CD
I was bowled over by Suzanne Heinrich's wonderful disc of Abel's solo gamba music a couple of years ago, and she has done it again with this disc of solo pieces by Tobias Hume. It's a joy from start to finish.

Tobias Hume was a soldier and musician active largely in and around the court of James VI/I, although he apparently travelled all over Europe as a soldier and mercenary. Little detail is known of his life, but he was clearly a very talented musician and composer. These are really lovely pieces with a great range of emotion although, as with Hume's contemporary Dowland, melancholy is to the fore. In her excellent notes, Heinrich says "these forgotten gems need to be taken out of their dusty drawers, polished and enjoyed in their full glory." I completely agree, and Heinrich has polished them for us very gloriously indeed. Her playing is fabulous, putting her virtuosity to the service of the music, with just the right amount of ornamentation and interpretation to allow Hume to really speak to us. There is (as with her Abel) a delightful, intimate feel to her playing and the recording, and the sound of her viola da gamba is just lovely.

The recorded sound is excellent, the notes are very interesting and the presentation is attractive. I don't mean to sound gushing, but I think this is another real gem of undeservedly neglected music from Suzanne Heinrich. Lovers of the gamba will need no prompting from me, but anyone with an interest in music of the period will enjoy this disc, and I recommend it very highly indeed.
