5.0 out of 5 stars Challenging
I love this cookbook, it is very challenging to me as a beginning home cook. Some of the challenge is finding the ingredients for some of the recipes, but I see that as an adventure not as a hardship. I've made some of the recipes and they turned out great, even my 'fussy food critic' wife like them. My favorite recipe is the Roasted Rhubarb Creme Brulee though I serve it...

2.0 out of 5 stars Not practical
I LOVE Gordon Ramsay. My boyfriend purchased this cookbook and also Gordon Ramsey Makes it Easy. This book is filled with items I would never dare even eat ex: roasted rabbit salad, a fish called Dorade, venison, lamb, etc. etc.
I think his work is marvelous but this book is not for your everyday cook. If you enjoy Gordon as much as I do, the best practical...

I've made some of the recipes and they turned out great, even my 'fussy food critic' wife like them. Nice recipes that are simple and fresh! I think you can see MPW's influence coming through the pages. I recommend this to anyone who likes to cook great food without the trendy, cumbersome fuss.

Chef Ramsay suggests this book is not for the novice cook. I disagree. This book is for the novice cook who has watched many television cooking shows and decided it looks easy.

Recipes in "Passion for Flavour" seem flowered too much with French words, which suggests some French influence in Chef Ramsay's cooking. French words are not an issue as there are many pictures of the dish presentations. Cooking is pretty much a foreign language to most Americans anyway. Don't sweat the French words.

The most affordable dish for the novice cook for whom this book is not intended, is probably the pasta dish. It is affordable provided the novice has access to a pasta machine or knows of a relative who received one as wedding gift maybe thirty years ago. Once you finally get a pasta machine though it is yours forever. The same applies to a food processor or large mixing bowl or sauce pan. Yours forever does not apply to the ingredients that are not typically in a novice cook's shopping cart. Gordon Ramsay recommends reading the dishes ahead of time. A novice should read recipes carefully ahead of time not because they need to really study. Novices must read the book ahead of time to know what appliance to buy at the next estate auction or borrow from grandma.

One peculiar thing about recipes and pictures in this book: many contestants on television cooking shows present dishes that are probably influenced by memorizing dishes found in "Passion for Flavour". Given that, the recipes in the book would be fun for groups of friends to pool resources to try at home.

This book demonstrates how people who call themselves "Chef" have probably earned that title and somebody else paid for the ingredients.

5.0 out of 5 stars His passion became my passion, March 12, 2007
This review is from: Passion for Flavour (Paperback)
Gordan Ransay's Passion for Flavours quickly became one of my favorite book. Not one of my favorite RECIPE books, but one of my favorite books I've ever read. All those mouthwatering recipes, in those bright, colorful pictures, makes me want to try them every weekend - it's when I have time to cook. A must be in every collection of those who love to cook for your beloved ones. This book made Gordon's passion becoming my own.

It's a cook book that you must have, the stocks and sauces part is really good for a book that the first print was 1996.

3.0 out of 5 stars GORDON & OTHER SIX LETTER WORDS., September 9, 2007

OF HIS MANY COOK BOOKS PASSION FOR FLAVOR IS NOT HIS BEST - HOWEVER IN SAYING THAT, HIS SELECTION
OF RECIPES IS MORE OBSCURE THAN CLASSIC - ON TURNING EACH PAGE YOU HOPE TO RUN ACCROSS A DISH
YOU CAN'T WAIT TO COOK INSTEAD THE PAGES KEEP TURNING WTH NO REAL EXCITEMENT OR TITILATION.

HIS REAL GIFT TO THE READER IS HOW TO DEVELOP SKILLS IN PRODUCING THE BASIC GROUNDWORK ON WICH
TO BUILD FLAVOR IF YOU DIDN'T ALLREADY KNOW HOW TO MAKE A TOMATO CONCASSE OR CREME PATISSERIE
THIS BOOK IS INVALUABLE - MUCH OF THE INGREDIENTS FOR SOME OF HIS DISHES WILL BE HARD IF NOT
IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND IN THE STATES - IE; RED MULLET - BRILL - GOOSE FAT - PARTRIDGE ETC IF YOU CAN FIND
THEM EXPECT TO PAY HANDSOMLY - NEARLY EVERY RECIPE INVOLVES LARGE QUANTITIES OF EXPENSIVE GOODIES.
MY FIRST SHOT AT ONE OF BIG BOYS RECIPES WAS HIS RABBIT/CABBAGE/CEPES TERRINE - IT COST A SMALL
FORTUNE - TOOK HOURS TO MAKE BUT SURPRISINGLY IT TURNED OUT GREAT.
SO RAMSAY FANS GIRD UP YOUR LOINS FOR THIS BOOK BUT REMEMBER DON'T GO
INTO ESCROW PAYING FOR THE INGREDIENTS.
BEAUTIFUL PHOTOGRAPHY AS CAN BE EXPECTED - BUT IN MY OPINION I COULD
OF DONE WITH MORE USEFUL AND LESS EXPENSIVE RECIPES.
A BOOK YOU WOULD USE TWICE A WEEK NOT ONCE A MONTH.
ON A SCALE OF ONE TO TEN - PASSION FOR FLAVOR WOULD BE A FIVE TO SIX
