5.0 out of 5 stars Great for family worship and learning hymns. The kids love it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Decent collection with flaws likes its predecessor
First, the good: it's a solid selection of hymns, and it's a great CD.

Next, an improvement: unlike the first volume in this series, there isn't a number of America-specific "hymns" that are more appropriate for a patriotic civics class and less appropriate to teach children Christian doctrine.

Finally, the disappointments: again, the collection...

This series of hymns is outstanding. They include recordings of some of the most classic hymns, with good recordings, the basic sheet music, all the lyrics, as well as stories related to the topic of each hymn and a suggested prayer for use during devotional or family worship time. The recordings are of kids singing the hymns alongside the music -- and they don't mess with the melody or introduce cheesy instruments typical of much contemporary Christian music or other CDs of hymns (sorry, had to be said). They are sung pretty much the way you'd sing them in Sunday worship. They are good for me (the dad) as well, because I didn't grow up in the church and have always wanted to learn these hymns.

We try to set aside 15 minutes a day as a family - to pray, practice the kids' catechism, read Scripture and then we use these books: perhaps read (or paraphrase) one of the stories related to a hymn, sing the hymn to God and talk about what we sang. The kids also love to listen to these CDs during their play time, and we frequently hear them singing the hymns to themselves at random times. Most of the classic hymns have good theology, which they can understand more over time. All in all, these are a great tool for facilitating either personal or family devotional time. I highly recommend them.

4.0 out of 5 stars An hymn curriculum in one small package!, September 18, 2007
This review is from: Passion Hymns for a Kid's Heart (Hymns for a Kid's Heart, Vol. 4) (Hardcover)
I am very pleased with this book and CD combination. A selection of hymns and devotionals that focus on the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ and his resurrection.

For each hymn the author is presented, a devotional beautifully relating the spiritual truths the hymn's contain in a way that is understandable for children. Be prepared to cry.

Also included is music, complete lyrics, a bible verse to contemplate/memorize, and a prayer. There is also a beautiful illustration accompanying each hymn - truly lovely, realistic paintings, full of light (and often children).

The music on the CD is wonderful, a combination of children singing and a female vocalist. Some of the songs sound a bit keyboardy or synthetic, I can't quite put my finger on it, but they are very lovely. Be prepared to cry. My daughter is always more encouraged to sing when there are children singing on a recording.

The only things I could have wished for are the historical background of the hymn (I suppose that would have made the book too long, and I do have some other resources I can use to hunt this information down), and the scripture presented in KJV (our family uses the KJV exclusively - and particularly for memorization).

We have been able to introduce some of these hymns in our church fellowship (I can't read music, so I learn by ear), as we sing hymns (seems to be a fading practice in many churches), and many are in our hymnal - as these are true classics. Our favourite is At the Cross.

Recommended for both adults and children, any Christian family, and particularly homeschoolers! I'm now slowly purchasing the rest of the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Passion Hymns is a hit, December 13, 2008

Our three year old granddaughter just loves this CD. She requests it over and over again and asks all sorts of questions about why Christ came and died and what "risen again" means! She loves to hear other children singing, and the orchestration is great.
Kudos guys, your CD is a hit.

I bought this as a Christmas present for my four- and six-year-olds, and I can't wait to give it to them! I am excited to teach them the hymns I grew up on.

First, the good: it's a solid selection of hymns, and it's a great CD.

Next, an improvement: unlike the first volume in this series, there isn't a number of America-specific "hymns" that are more appropriate for a patriotic civics class and less appropriate to teach children Christian doctrine.

Finally, the disappointments: again, the collection has pithy reflections that we don't even bother reading and dated clip art. Unlike the first volume (focusing on biographical sketches of the hymn authors), this volume has a mash of retold Bible stories and morality lessons from childhood anecdotes. The text becomes filler.

For the hymns themselves, again, they have ONLY melody and NO harmony. That's a significant stumbling block for me. And the egregious typo of "it's own" instead of "its own" in "Crown Him with Many Crowns" is just the most glaring of the stylistic problems I have with the book.

Again, all in all, not bad for someone interested in raising kids with some hymns--but it really has some flaws that lead us to rely more often on a trusty old Trinity or Cokesbury hymnal rather than this one.

3.0 out of 5 stars Different than I expected, May 25, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Passion Hymns for a Kid's Heart (Hymns for a Kid's Heart, Vol. 4) (Hardcover)
The quality is good, just different than I was expecting and not really what I wanted. I wanted something simple to be able to teach kids hymns. The CD is a BIG production, with full orchestra, grand instrumental interludes, key changes, etc. Listening to it felt like being in a mega-church on Easter morning. The children sing well, but it is difficult to hear the words on many songs over all the instrumentation. The book is good quality also, but the tight hardback binding makes it impossible to set open to the music pages on a piano. I noticed the others in the series appear to be spiral bound, but not this one. I would have appreciated a CD of a few kids singing to a piano with the same music provided in the book. I don't expect to use this much at all for my purposes, but it depends what you're after.

These are so uplifting for both child and parent. My 3-yr. old boy and 1-yr. old girl find these hymns to be very upbeat and excellent. They both are very fond of classical music and these hymns are a perfect variation for them.

I was hoping for a bit of history behind the hymns or about the composer/lyricist. However, the hymns are good, the CD is good-quality, and the stories are well-written so my 6-year-old can understand them.

This review is from: Passion Hymns for a Kid's Heart (Hymns for a Kid's Heart, Vol. 4) (Hardcover)
I stumbled across this book (and CD) and got the idea to have our music ministry present this to our children as part of their baptismal process to encourage family worship at home. The book is well written and the graphics are beautiful. Our church sings hymns as well as contemporary music so it will be very appealing to our children. I know it will be a blessing.
