Canada's Amy Winehouse perhaps??,

Wow, I'm the first one to review this record??? And it's a year old!! Anyhoo, I just got it, as I asked a friend to pick it up, being he was just in Canada on vacation, so hey, why not??
Anyhoo, I first became aware of Alberta, Canada-born Kreesha whilst on vacation in Newfoundland last year, and I heard "Don't Call Me Baby" a few times on the radio up there on St Johns' local Top 40-ish station, and was blown away, thinking I have to have this...I did some research, and saw that Capitol was releasing the song (and so I thought the album too) in the US, and it did really well on the Billboard Club Play chart, top 3 I think, so I waited for a US release...and waited...and waited...but nothing...I concluded that Capitol US declined a US release for "Passion"...shoot, I HATE when that happens!!! I need to know why!! So I either had to order it online or buy it next time in Canada, or a friend was going, and he offered and asked if there were any Canadian-only titles I wanted...so the only thing I could think of was Kreesha...I almost said Skye Sweetnam's amazing "Sound Soldier" too, but I found a copy at NYC's Strand Bookstore, of all places!! So I got it...the version with 2 bonus tracks...as I wanted/needed to hear more than just the amazing "Don't Call Me Baby", to figure out Kreesha as an ARTIST...really, you can't tell based on one song, you CAN'T, no matter how great the song, you have to hear the full platter, to hear the range, the art, to judge and figure out the artist, and with Kreehsa, it's no different. My conclusion??? For Capitol to NOT release "Passion" below the border did her a serious disservice, I'm sorry. I conclude that she's not really commercial at all...she's an alternative soul artist with some pop sensibility, sorta like Estelle, but she wouldn't fit into narrow playlists...she's unique, which I personally prefer. And at least, "Don't Call Me Baby" should have been a HUGE hit outside the clubs...it has total widespread appeal...from fans of alt-soul people like Amy Winehouse, Duffy, Estelle, and Corinne Bailey Rae, and even straight up soul/Top 40 crossover people like Mariah Carey and classic soul people like Diana Ross...even if she became a 1-hit wonder, at least people would have HEARD the song at all and fell in love with it, but most people never got to hear it. If I had the power, I would love to change that PRONTO. Oh and the rest of "Passion" is as great as the single...some tracks have some Latin spice like the opening title track, and in spite of the cheesy title, "Bounce With Me" is a great song, an alt-soul gem with a great melody and vocal chops. Kreesha wrote/co-wrote most of the songs on "Passion", so she's not some manufactured, producer-driven, Auto-Tuned fake singer like most in America's Top 40 hit parade...I hate basically all of them...Kreesha has more talent and originality in her pinky finger than all of those people combined...with some exceptions, like Rhianna is decent...if their audience heard Kreesha at all, their ears would perk right up like a German Shepherd...the opening is similar to the lame Leona Lewis' "Bleeding Love", but once the tune kicks in, it raises the bar to such a level like a jet airline taking off....whooooooosh, and the Rhythm Mix is even better. Hopefully with my help, people won't have to go Kreesha WHO???? And it's not a common name either, unforgettable...so's her music.

I heard about Kreesha Turner from a blog in 2008 and decided to give her album a try. It was interesting to learn that a few of her influences are Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, Andre3000 & Common because at first glance one might assume that she was going to be another basic pop/r&b singer. However her album is an interesting mix of ballads, melodic dance & hip hop edged r&b.
Vocally she has a light airy soprano-ish ability that I liken to the singer, Duffy but Kreesha's voice is smoother & not "scratchy" like Duffy's - she didn't overtax by straining too much and I have to also give her props for writing a majority of the songs. It is a shame that the label decided not to release it in the US because a few of these tracks definitely could've garnered her some fans. The tracks that stood out to me: PASSION - very quirky track featuring a clashing of the instruments that somehow works; BEAUTIFUL - midtempo melodic track on which her voice sounds really sweet & airy; BOUNCE WITH ME - very upbeat fun track with a great beat, her quick delivery of the pre-chorus kind of reminded me of PON DE REPLAY; BLACK MAGIC & LADY KILLER - both have a ragtime/hip hop element and remind me of songs by Lina & Billy Miles MY PLACE - plaintive, sweet ballad lamenting a lost love and a new girl taking "her place"; IF YOU SEE HIM - I love the simplicity of this track, particularly the guitar accompanying her & her vocals sung in such a nice key; SHATTERED - a ballad that reminds me of the doo-wop era with its chorus The tracks that are just ok: ALWAYS (LOVING YOU) - Kreesha is really straining to get to the upper reaches of her ability on the main part of this song which is not pleasant to hear BUT when she segues into the Minnie Riperton song, LOVING YOU, she sounds great; DON'T CALL ME BABY - reminds me of a 60's girl group anthem, it's not a bad track I just don't like it as much as the others. Again it's a shame that she didn't get to cross over to the US however that may be a blessing in disguise. Kreesha found success in Canada and has probably gotten to perform and perfect her stage presence enough so that when she releases her sophomore album maybe it'll have stronger more compelling tracks that'll reach people & gain her crossover appeal making it easier for a label to present her in this market. I would highly recommend this album to those who enjoy unique vocalists and an interesting "out of the box" musical approach.

I can't say enough about this record. It's fresh, innovative, catchy, beautiful and simply awesome. Kreesha Turner marries pop, jazz and r&b to create an infectious sound that goes perfectly with her distinctive but smooth vocals. Imagine a mix of Jazmine Sullivan with Duffy and you can get an idea of Kreesha's sound.
I think what I love most about Kreesha's music is that tracks like "Lady Killer" and "Black Magic" (my two favorites) invoke this mental image of a dark club where everyone's just dancing the tango or rumba. While the music actually doesn't really have any Latin influences, those tracks at least just give off that vibe. It's sexy. My least favorite tracks are some of the slow ones like "Alway's (Lovin You)" where I just can't get into them and remind me too much of music you would hear on a "smooth r&b adult" station. Thankfully, she does have a couple excellent slower tracks like "Beautiful" that aren't boring in the slightest. I honestly hate the fact that this album was never released domestically in the US. I simply have no idea why from a listening and business standpoint. Kreesha did well with this album in Canada earning two Juno nominations so its clear both critics and fans love her. It just seems strange that an album that did well in one country wouldn't be released in its neighbor country. Also, on a closing note, I feel I should let you know that I first became aware of Kreesha through her guest vocals on "Dust In Gravity" which is simply amazing but unfortunately not on this album. Go look it up on youtube if you love quality music.
