Editorial Reviews

'While the words Passion, Pain and Pleasure immediately invoke sexual thoughts, for me they have become somewhat of a personal mantra because they so accurately describe this time in my life,' says Trey Songz. 'The passion I have for my art fuels my drive and work ethic, while the sacrifice of my personal life to benefit my career will always be a source of pain. The pleasure that I derive from my work and my accomplishments make everything worth it. When I began conceptualizing the new album, these three words stuck in my head. They completely infiltrated my creative process, so it was inevitable that they became the album title.'

'PASSION, PAIN & PLEASURE' is Songz' hugely anticipated follow-up to 2009s RIAA gold-certified smash, 'READY.' From the bouncy first single, 'Bottoms Up (Feat. Nicki Minaj)' to the driving, rock-infused 'Blind,' the new album sees the Virginia-based R&B superstar energized and evolving as he continues to refine his mastery of of sultry, soulful song-craft.

'This album is a step closer to me recording without inhibitions,' says Songz. 'It embodies the best parts of 'READY' with the heart of 'ANTICIPATION' and the originality of 'I GOTTA MAKE IT.''

Songz enlisted a company of gifted producers to accompany him on his artistic journey, including Bei Maejor, Tha Bizness, Mario Winans, Mark Jackson, Kane Beatz and, of course, his longtime production partner, Songbook Entertainment founder Troy Taylor. As ever, Trey displays effortless vocal dexterity while simultaneously relaying complex emotional depth and power. The throbbing, minimalist 'Can't Be Friends' and the classic R&B romance of 'Please Return My Call' reveal reflective and introspective themes of love and human relations, stressing the sensual above the overtly sexual.

'This is the album where I talk to the people who think all I can sing about is sex,' says Songz. 'I take a step further out of that realm, although I do keep one foot in.'

'PASSION, PAIN & PLEASURE' marks Songz' first new release since making the transition from rapidly rising young artist to bonafide R&B superstar. 'READY' was a true breakthrough, giving Trey his first-ever Billboard 200 Top Ten debut on its way to RIAA gold certification. Fueled by an infinite streak of hit singles including 'I Need A Girl,' 'LOL :-) (Feat. Gucci Mane and Soulja Boy Tell 'Em),' 'Successful (Drake & Trey Songz),' 'I Invented Sex,' 'Neighbors Know My Name,' and 'Say Aah.' 'READY' received a Grammy Award nomination for 'Best Contemporary R&B Album.'

An assortment of major awards followed, including the prestigious title of 'Best Male R&B Artist' at the 2010 BET Awards. That triumph capped an extraordinary year that included touring as both headliner and special guest on Jay-Z's massive 'BP3 Tour 2010,' numerous TV appearances, and star-studded recording sessions like Lionel Richie and Quincy Jones' new version of 'We Are The World,' benefiting Haitian earthquake relief organizations. All that and more was documented in Trey's hugely popular docu-series, 'My Moment.' An unqualified ratings sensation, the 10-part BET documentary provided an exclusive window into Songz' life and career, chronicling everything up to and including the making of the new album.

The late, great Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun once declared Trey to be 'among the most promising R&B artists we have had on Atlantic since we started the company 60 years ago.' That promise long fulfilled, 'PASSION, PAIN & PLEASURE' now confidently confirms Trey Songz' rightful place at the very forefront of contemporary urban music.

'I've had three albums before this, but only one was really a hit,' he says. 'This album will show that I'm not going anywhere.'

5.0 out of 5 stars One of His Best!, September 14, 2010
This review is from: Passion, Pain & Pleasure (Audio CD)
If you are a true Trey Songz fan then you will absolutely LOVE this album and if you are not then you will still love this album. Of course the album contains tracks Bottoms Up and Cant Be Friends but there are so many well written tracks on this CD! For Starters I purchased the DVD/CD combo from Target. The DVD/CD combo has him performing his songs from Ready to about 30 people. It's a very intimate setting. The DVD is about 30 minutes. I highly recommend getting that version because it's the Deluxe version and it's only available at Target but regardless, I would definitely get this album no matter where you get it because it's that hot. Trey Songz is so talented and you can tell by this album that he's growing as an artist. I didn't have his album Ready but purchased many of the Mp3's. I went back out and purchased Ready because of this album. That's how nice the album is. You will not be disappointed at all. It's one of his best! I especially LOVE the Passion, Pleasure and Pain interludes. My favorite songs on the album are Love Faces, Massage, Bottoms Up, Can't Be Friends, Unusual (feat. Drake), Made to Be Together and Love Me Better. I haven't always been a Trey Songz fan, but I'm surely am now:)

4.0 out of 5 stars A Step Back from Ready..., September 14, 2010
This review is from: Passion, Pain & Pleasure (Audio CD)
Trey Songz has finally established his name in the R&B game, he has become a sex symbol in every sense and people are now getting to know Trey Songz betetr as an artist. His third album Ready was needless to say his BEST album or magnum opus. Ready was such a surprise which made it less of a hype which made me love it even more. The production on Ready was amzing and well thought out and Treys variety was spot on. However, while this new album isn't a bad one, it really can't compare to the previous album. Passion, Pain & Pleasure is a concept that showcases all the emotions of love in Treys eyes, which is a good concept but falls short. I like about half of the songs on the album, but the other half has yet to fully grasp me, to me this is an album that doesn't get you right away but can learn to love later on.

1) Here We Go Again (Interlude) - A terrible start to the album. I mean this is not a good way to start an "R&B" album. Panty Droppa was a sick intro to Ready but this intro gives you an idea of what Trey's mentality with this album is. It's too Hip Hop. 0/5

2) Love Faces - This should have started the album just fine instead of the stupid interlude. Trey is back with his horny self and gets straight to the sex. The melody is nice and sensual. Trey's vocals has improved and you can tell with this song. The song is about "in the moment" sex and is perfect Baby making music. 4/5

3) Massage - Trey has been highly compared to R. Kelly throughout the years and this song is a perfect example of why that remains to be said. This song is vintage R. Kelly and Treys voice is wayyy too similar to R. Kelly with this joint. I love the beat to this song, its very relaxing and can take you to other wordly places if you let it. 4/5

4) Alone - I like that Trey has a pop side to him, which makes him very versitile compared to other R&B artists. This is a typical Trey Song and sounds like it belongs on Trey Day or something. I like the song but nothing special. 3/5

5) Bottoms Up feat. Nicki Minaj - The first time I heard this song, it took me a while to love it. But now that I have heard it multiple times I just love it. Although this is a party record and it doesn't showoff Treys singing ability its a very good record. Nicki Minaj makes an appearance with a very colorful and unforgettable verse. You gotta love the way he says COME HERE!!! hilarious. 5/5

6) Pain (Interlude) - Another reason why I believe this album is a stepback from Ready is the fact that the interludes aren't as musical as the ones on ready. These interludes do have a purpose but I believe that the interludes on Ready were like short songs with potential, and these interludes are just plain interludes. This interlude is pretty corny and very little singing cuz of Treys talking. 3/5

7) Can't Be Friends - This song is a masterpiece. This is easily the BEST song on Passion, Pain & Pleasure. The production, lyrics and feel of the record is just amazing. The song samples off a muscial piece from the movie Babel, and it is perfectly sampled thanks to Mario Winans. Anybody with a broken relationship can relate to this song at first listen, it can almost bring you to tears. 6/5

8) Please Return My Call - This is reminicent of Trey's old style from his Gotta Make It days. Has an old school R&B feel to it almost similar to Prince. Love the lyrics and Trey sings his ass off in this one. 5/5

9) Made to Be Together - I hate when Trey talks sometimes, it ruins the song and especially when it is not sex related. Again this is almost like another R. Kelly song so I can't really give Trey points for originality. It's a good song though. 4/5

10) Pleasure (Interlude) - Pleasure would have to be the best interlude of the album. This interlude would be a great song in my opinion, very nice and sexual. Trey hits the falsetto a couple of times. This is how his interludes should always be like. 5/5

11) Red Lipstick - A nice change from the rest of the rest of the album. This isn't your typical Trey song which is a good thing. It has a futuristic feel to it, and the subject matter isn't straightforward which is a plus. This song gives the album variety which I appreciate very much. 5/5

12) The Usual feat. Drake - Now we're back to the sex-driven Trey Songz we all know and love. This is almost I Invented Sex part. 2. This marks the second time he has collaborated with Drake and the combination is as great as R. Kelly and Jay-Z. The only flaw I have with this song are the uninspired lyrics Trey delivers, it gets tiresome about halfway through the song, thank god Drake comes in and saves it. The beat is the grittiest on the album thanks to Boi-1da. Trey and Drake should really think about making a collaboration album because this tag team never fails. 4/5

13) Doorbell - As much as I love Trey, this song is just plain corny. Song may like it but I personally don't think its that great. The beat is pretty cool but the constant ding dongs are just plain corny. 3/5

14) Passion (Interlude) - Not that great of an interlude. Again corny with too much talking from some ghetto hood rat. But at least Trey sings more on this interlude. 3/5

15) Unfortunate - Produced by Drakes long time collaborator Noah "40" Shebib this is the darkest song on this album. Not a typical Trey Song, but I'm a little iffy about this song. Its about being unfortunate with a girl where the love goes away. I don't really know if I like it or hate it. I don't completely skip this song, but this song can get boring. 3/5

16) Blind - The beat to this song is very popish which I like. I didn't really expect this kind of music from Trey which is very surprising. I just like the fact Trey is experimenting with different sounds. This is almost a rock sound for Trey but its not bad at all. I quite like this song. 4/5

17) You Just Need Me - Passion, Pain & Pleasure was a good R&B CD but I hope Trey does a little bit better with his next album. I was a little dissapointed with this album. When you compare it with Ready, there really is no comparison. The album ends with this song which has another Pop feel to it. I can almost imagine the Backstreet Boys or a boy band sing this. This isn't exactly how I would end the album but its not a bad song. 3/5
