A Different Drum,
By Marc Ruby™ "The Noh Hare™" (Warren, MI USA) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE) (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER)
This review is from: Passion (Audio CD)
When Martin Scorsese directed the film version of Kazantsakis' The Last Temptation of Christ, Peter Gabriel was selected to do the score. Gabriel had already established credentials as an adventuresome composer who could respond to the dramatic nature of the film with a fitting score. What he produced was something far beyond Scorcese's expectations. For those of you that haven't seen the film, it is a brooding look at not just the events leading up to Gethsemane, but also the interior experience of Jesus as he faced the challenges of his fate. The music feeds into and frames the events on the screen creating and atmosphere of tension that from which the viewer never quite escapes. With the film score complete Gabriel still felt he had more to do, and Passion is the polished result of taking the score and remaking it to stand alone. Gabriel's approach was to use an entire panoply of North African and Asian rhythms and sounds. The countries represented are Turkey, Pakistan, India, Ivory Coast, Bahrain, Egypt, New Guinea, Morocco, Senegal and Ghana. Nor did Gabriel settle for second best. Prominent vocalists like Youssou N'Dour, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Baaba Maal combine with the likes of Hossam Ramzy and David Rhodes to produce effects ranging from toe-tapping to incredibly eerie. This isn't easy listening music. It deals with a difficult subject and does it by building an interior effect. At times the rhythm and harmony are almost unnerving. Moments of peace are rare and precious. Something magic happen in Gabriel's hands and the whole is much more than a simple collection of world music parts. Thoroughly modern, yet full of its roots this is an album of unusual and brilliant insights.

Undeniably brilliant,

Like many reviewers, I first listened to Passion the year it was released...and I didn't find it all that good. At the time, to my ears, it was nothing earthshattering, important, or worthy of repeated listenings.Oh, man, have my tastes changed! Passion is not only brilliant, well-constructed music, it's also perfect music to play at the office, with my headphones on as I write. It inspires. It uplifts. It shocks. It moves. it invokes. It transports. It beckons. It mesmerizes. I don't really remember the movie on which this soundtrack was based (although I saw The Last Temptation of Christ once or twice long ago), but I don't have to. This soundtrack stands on its own, and is a remarkable achievement in its own right. The beauty -- and brilliance -- of Peter Gabriel's music (however you want to term it -- progressive rock, world music, eclectic music, experimental music, etc.) is that it never ceases to be compelling. Let's call this soundtrack "world music" for want of a better phrase. The world this music takes me to is the world of imagination, inside my mind, that I truly need to explore more often. Passion deserves as much high praise as can be heaped upon it.

Absolutely Stunning,
By
This review is from: Passion: Music For The Last Temptation Of Christ (Audio CD)
This is perhaps the most beautiful motion picture soundtrack I have ever heard - Middle Eastern rhythms & prominent African artists combine with Peter Gabriel's unique style and haunting voice to create...something truly extraordinary. There is a tangible storyline in the music alone...listening carefully, in a darkened or candle-lit room, one can experience a truly phenomenal sequence of thoughts, feelings, and inner quests, all without benefit of pharmaceuticals. A stream of pictures within sounds, a flow that's indescribable, takes the listener on an inner journey. Putting this CD in while sleeping always produces the most interesting, vivid, amazing dreams, too.Even if you did not see the movie, or hated the movie, you may very well enjoy this soundtrack. Too, Christian faith is not a prerequisite - the music is primal, resonating within us on a level that takes us back to a much earlier time, when much of mankind lived in the deserts, and lived a different life. Meditation using this CD can bring on powerful results - and I suspect everyone will experience it in a very different manner. It's inspiring, and having it on during creative endeavors such as writing or painting is likely to produce incredible works. This album is destined to become a classic of our time, something people a hundred years from now will look back upon as an honest-to-goodness musical phenomenon. I have a pretty broad taste in music, but this album may well just be my favorite, on certain days. It is perpetually in my top five, kept company by other albums such as "Sublime," "Garbage," and "Antichrist Superstar" (ironically enough.) I would absolutely advise anyone to give this album a shot, and really open up their minds to the full experience. The resulting emotions and streams of consciousness are truly remarkable.

The peak of musical achievement,
By
This review is from: Passion (Audio CD)
Peter Gabriel has come a long way in his musical career. He was the lead vocalist for the prog-rock band Genesis from 1969-1974, during which time the group released some of the finest rock albums ever recorded. Since releasing his first solo album in 1977, Gabriel has never ceased experimenting, determined not to settle on one sole sound. It was on PASSION, however, that Gabriel's musical journey finally reaches its peak.
PASSION is the "soundtrack" to Martin Scorsese's controversial epic THE LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST, released in 1988 to mixed reviews. The one thing that reviewers could agree on was that Peter Gabriel's score for the film was magnificent. Gabriel held off releasing his score simultaneously with the film; instead, he did a wonderful thing: he went back to the studio and expanded his original material, thus ensuring that PASSION would work as well as an album as it would as a soundtrack. It certainly does. In fact, PASSION works so well on its own that many of its avid fans haven't even seen THE LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST. That's because, in my opinion, THE LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST is a very good film - but PASSION is a masterpiece. In these circumstances, "masterpiece" seems like far too weak an adjective to apply to this album, and none of the countless other adjectives seem powerful enough either. Let me say this: PASSION IS music. This is as good as music gets. This is the very definition of music. If you give PASSION, an album that sounds vastly different from the music we westerners are used to and nothing like any of Gabriel's other recordings, a chance, you will experience the most powerful album I have ever heard. PASSION is THE landmark world music album. Peter Gabriel, a long-time fan of middle eastern music, decided to base his music for Scorsese's film around the music of the eiddle east, resulting in a highly-unusual listening experience for westerners. Gabriel recruited some of the finest musicians in the world for this album, and also thoroughly researched middle eastern music, as well as the songs that are said to have existed around the time of Jesus. With all this, the album should sound like a traditional work, but Gabriel himself plays numerous modern instruments, giving certain songs some extra power and creating a dreamily ambient feeling throughout most of the album. The result is one of the most timeless musical works ever recorded. There's something about the album that really speaks to your soul. It leaves you feeling open, exposed, a feeling that's more than a little unsettling at first, but upon listening further, you come to embrace this openness. PASSION truly touches you, and certain tracks even elevate you. My favorite tracks from the album are "A Different Drum" and "It Is Accomplished", the two most powerful pieces of music I have ever heard. It's no easy feat describing PASSION. I can only urge you, strongly, to purchase it and give it a few listens. I guarantee you have never experienced anything like it. It's utterly incredible that the soundtrack to THE LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST could wind up so absolutely magnificent as this, but it did. Peter Gabriel is a musical genius, and PASSION remains by far his finest achievement. It is, without a doubt, the peak of musical achievement.

"Passion" is a stunning work of art and expression of love.,

As much as I respect and care for "The Last Temptation of Christ," Peter Gabriel's stunning score is an undisputed classic and a true statement of love. Gabriel's success in embracing seemingly "foreign" genres of music (the hallmark of any great artist) is a revelation. While thousands of artists attempt to co-opt eastern forms of music to appear chic or worldly, Gabriel truly celebrates it and re-interprets it. Rare is the musician who can accomplish that on a record.More importantly, Peter Gabriel's record can only be described as a labor of faith and love. Only a deep faith and love could have inspired such works as "A Different Drum" and "It Is Accomplished." Peter Gabriel did not just score a movie. He created a deeply moving and inspirational work. Along those lines, it compares very favorably to "A Love Supreme." This is, in my humble opinion, one of the best albums of its time. Even if you hate the movie, you will love this CD.

Want to be Passionate about Music?,

People writing these reviews for Peter Gabriel's "Passion" are not just jumping on the bandwagon because there is real credibility to saying that this music is profound, at the apex of creativity, and any other hyperbolic statements you can think of (its not hyperbole though if its true...you be the judge of that though when you listen to Gabriel's Passion).I'm not an expert at the world music genre, but Gabriel does take his musical influences and performers the world over and fuses them into an ambient spiritual vision. I say vision because this music has an optical quality that speaks of scenes and events. It is powerful enough to allow you to close your eyes and see scenes playing on the back of your eyelids. We played this CD while driving through Yosemite and experienced serious sensory overload staring at 5,000 vertical feet of granite while this powerful hymns brought us into the church of the world. Here is what I see to a few of the tracks (once you get this CD you'll see things too...no mind altering substances needed): Track 1 (The Feeling Begins): Sunrise in the desert on a day of great expectations. Moving through traffic with caffeine surging through the system. Suddenly things are not as they were before. On this day things are different. Things are going to change. Track 3 (Of These, Hope): The opening hails a great meeting. I think of the League of Nations or the Modern Day UN. This time the organization is effective. This time they have teeth. Through the song they have laid out and debated a plan to resolve the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. At the end they are ready to put it into action. A guitar wails hope and cries out the days last light. Track 10 (Open): A blind man sees for the first time and not just any old hospital room. Somebody has placed him in front of the Pyramids of Ghiza or the Eiger/Munch/Jungfrau valley or maybe the Sawtooths of Idaho. Track 15 (Passion): People have realized they are worshipping the same God and can stop killing each other over belief. They have just built the largest cathedral claiming an interfaith universal religion. Think the Koln cathedral, the Taj Mahal, and the Mecca Mosque all thrown into one. An Imam starts it off with chanted prayer (ala Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's Qwualli from Pakistan). A Hindu cleric joins in (ala voiced by Youssou N'Dour from Senegal). An English choir boy (Julian Wilkins) with pure voice raises eyes and ears to the rafters as sunlight streams through great 10 story tall arched windows. This track is pretty phenomenal and worth the price of admission alone. Track 21 (Bread and Wine): It's a beautiful moonlit night in an Alaskan bay as glacier's reach fingers into the water. Somewhere a herd of humpback's loll through the water calling songs to each other. The world is at peace. Get this CD. You'll be seeing things too. Let me know when you do.

Visionary...,
By A Customer
This review is from: Passion: Music For The Last Temptation Of Christ (Audio CD)
This recording is a journey...a pilgramage, and/or vision quest...beautiful and dream-like...it crosses the rythmic hypnotic power of middle eastern music with the warmth of christian faith. While faith certainly isn't a requirement to enjoy this album (there are little or no english vocals)...I feel it has in some way, helped me grow in mine...I really admire peter gabriel...his work is so creative...I love how he incorporates exotic sounds and music from around the world into his own creations. Passion, however, exists on a higher level than his solo career. This album inspired me to buy the music of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and other artists featured on this album. One thing Passion has, that these other middle eastern recordings usually don't, is sort of a "synthesized, all the songs flow into each other, ether-trippy feel" It's a hybrid of the ancient and the cutting edge...a masterpiece...

Passion According To St. Peter,
By
This review is from: Passion (Audio CD)
"Passion" is Peter Gabriel's landmark 1989 soundtrack album to the controversial film, "The Last Temptation Of Christ," directed by Martin Scorsese. It is also one of Gabriel's finest works ever. The album is ocean-deep in sounds, moods & rhythms, as Gabriel is augmented by singers & musicians from around the world, such as Shankar, Hossam Ramzy, Yousou N'dour, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Baba Maal, and many others. It's a sensational, breathtaking pallette of music, quite possibly THE best world music album ever recorded. And you don't have to listen to it within the context of the film, either, as the album totally opens up the listener's imagination, with such tracks as "The Feeling Begins," with it's driving rhythms, "Of These, Hope," with it's chugging bass lines suggesting the movement of a caravan, "A Different Drum," with it's beautiful chanting (featuring Gabriel) and slamming percussion, "Zaar," with it's sensation of being in a thunder & rain storm, "Before Night Falls," featuring beautiful finger cymbals that sparkle on your stereo speakers, the lovely "With This Love," the haunting "Passion," with vocals by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan that will send shivers down your spine, and the glorious, triumphant "It Is Accomplished." But every single track here is simply stunning. And the new remastering treatment on the album makes it sound even crisper & sharper than ever before. "Passion" may not be a "proper" Peter Gabriel album, but nonetheless, Gabriel totally outdid himself with this one. The fact that he wasn't even nominated for an Academy Award for this exquisite film score is a total mockery of justice. Peter Gabriel's "Passion" is a musical triumph. It's music will haunt you & stimulate your senses. A true classic. :-)

Beyond Belief!,
This review is from: Passion: Music For The Last Temptation Of Christ (Audio CD)
Passion is unreal in its beauty. The ambient hues, and unbridled passion and purity that Gabriel is able to musically capture and then divulge, channel and purify into a sonic representation of the most dificult struggle man could ever know, all human and all holy. Peter Gabriel's Passion is an amazing tribute to music and the soul and it lives far beyond its proper title. It is passion. A gemstone in a growing, glowing, golden crown of a musician who in my book is the greatest composer of the 20th Century. This album will stay with you and is the best album I own. It is as powerful as John McArthur's, HIDDEN and as humbling as Jeff Johnson's, Navigatio with a faint whisper of This Mortal Coil's, Song to the Siren. Buy this album. It won't forget you.

Words cannot tell...,

When I first heard this album my mother played it for me when I was about fifteen. Needless to say--I hated it. Then one day I grew up a little. I listened to it again and fell in love. I have heard no album, piece of music, or natural sound that is more pleasing to my ears than the music from this one. From the haunting tones of "Troubled," to the purity of love in "With this love," Peter Gabriel has created a work of art so incredible that God himself must have commisioned it. Not Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, or even Mozart himself could have written something so naturely beautiful. Whether you are listening to relax or to set the mood for a romantic moment, "Passion" will come forth from your stereo and take a life of it's own. It will transport you to a world of sand, wind, and raw emotion with a magical sound that will leave you begging for more. I have found this album to be highly addictive, and have a copy both in my car and apartment to keep me satisfied. I must warn people who are familiar with Peter's other work, and have not yet listened to this album, that it is unlike anything you have ever heard from him before. But I advise you to listen. It will change your life (or maybe just your nights).
