Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Orthodox in spirit but stressing the inner journey of faith rather than doctrinal formulas, these thoughtful and nuanced reflections by the dean of San Francisco's Grace Cathedral explore the spiritual meaning of Lent, the Crucifixion, and Easter. Jones probes a faith born in "the collision of two passions--our passion for God and God's passion for us." His insights critique both fundamentalism and secular relativism, inviting all who need "loving out of their disappointment, cynicism, and despair" into a new resurrection hope. Deeply felt and intelligent, highly literate without the least pretension, this makes rewarding reading.-- EC

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent food for the way!, March 8, 2000
As a spiritual director in a large Roman Catholic parish, this is a book I regularly hand out to my parishioners and to those beginging spiritual direction. It is a great resource for folks who are "not there yet" in terms of spirituality. It leads the reader to a solid understanding of the need for decision in the spiritual journey and points clearly to the person of Jesus and His redemptive Holy Week journey as the focus and the standard for the travel. Jones is directive without being tryannical, Christian, without scaring off the beginner. I would not hesitate to give this book to those starting or in the midst of spiritual growth, those convinced or those questioning. AND its enjoyable!
