5.0 out of 5 stars This guy can play with anyone!
Punchy or melodic, Celtic, or (?), this guy does it all; and blends techniques like no one I've ever heard. Amazing right- and left-hand work, timing, and musical sensability. This guy can play with anybody. He summons many of the same sounds from his guitar as the late Michael Hedges, though he developed them independently, more or less at the same time as Michael...

2.0 out of 5 stars technically great monotony
This guy has got technique to burn but seldom plays with much feel. He often gets caught up in playing too many notes and doesnt let the guitar breath. there are 3 good tracks on this album - find them if you'd like. Personally, I'd rather continue building my Kottke collection.

This guy can play with anybody. He summons many of the same sounds from his guitar as the late Michael Hedges, though he developed them independently, more or less at the same time as Michael did. But, it's all part of the music. Like he says: Heavy Wood.

The simple production style really works. The recording is wonderful and nothing gets between you and the music.

I was just introduced to Don Ross's music two weeks ago from a friend's friend in Vancouver, BC. It sure is hard for Canadians to get exposure in the US. I've been listening to "new acoustic music" for 20 years and I had never heard of him.

Buy this record!

5.0 out of 5 stars Music that makes your eyes buldge and your spine tingle!, May 15, 1999

Undoubtedly the finest player of some of the most intricate and abstract guitaring I have ever come across. I became an instant Don Ross fan after hearing him play on a hot Saturday afternoon in a park east of Toronto about 8 years ago. As a guitar-player myself, I had to talk with him about his influences and style after his show. Not only did his playing throw me for a loop, but his approachable real easy-goin'-big-gallut-like personality sets him well apart from others--both as a musician and a person in my books. This album, as well as all of his other albums I own, have brought me scads and scads of listening pleasure.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the greatest accoustic guitar players and composers l, April 3, 2001

Don Ross is one of the greatest accoustic guitar players and composers living today. It would be astonishing enough that Don is so technically advanced a player. But, then you add his ability to compose accoustic guitar music that makes you laugh, gasp, dream, cry, dance....

When I first heard a Don Ross recording over ten years ago, it was as if I had entered a 50 minute daydream. A couple of weeks later I saw him perform live and, as an accoustic guitar player myself, I was simply stunned by his actually playing. A few weeks after that I was very fortunate to start weekly guitar lessons with Don that lasted for over 8 months. I don't want to sound cliche or trite here, but, Don Ross is a rare combination of a musical genius, an emotive composer and a decent human being. Buy this CD. Then you'll know why you have buy his other recordings.

If you like acoustic guitar you have to have this CD. Ross's guitar playing is breathtaking, and his tunes are wonderful. Because of this CD, my 5-CD car player has become a 4-CD machine: one of the slots is permanently taken. The rhythm, the drive, the melodies, the articulation...amazing. Don, quick, go record more stuff. You make it, I'll buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Acousticphonics Guitar Master, June 24, 2000
This review is from: Passion Session (Audio CD)
Before I listen to Don's album, I already knew that after Michael Hedges the acousic guitar textures is going to a much wider zone than ever, but Don is absolutely amazing, you have to listen to his album if you like acousitc guitar, there is more creative space for him to lead, what more you can get from acoustic guitar solo?

When a friend picked this CD up and asked me what this guy does, my immediate response was "frightens guitarists". Its just a joy to hear. If you only ever buy 1 acoustic guitar CD in your life, make it this one. Gotta go, its on again!

Buy it. Plays a 7 string baritone guitar for an interesting twist. One of the best finger-stylists today.

If you are a fan of the late Michael Hedges, you will greatly enjoy this CD. While by no means a clone of Hedges, Ross draws the same energy and dynamic range of tones from his instrument. The production quality is clean and there is not a less than superb track on the CD. I am looking forward to his next project. BTW, I hope Ross can NOT sing--I've never gotten over the loss of George Benson's guitar in favor of his voice.

5.0 out of 5 stars I really like this cd, April 9, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Passion Session (Audio CD)
I've had this cd a week and already I wake up in the morning with these wonderful melodies playing in my head. The tunes are infectious and his technique is amazing. If you like fingerstyle guitar, I would venture to say you would like this. If you don't have any fingerstyle guitar in you music collection, this would be a very nice start.

5.0 out of 5 stars His finest work to date..., September 23, 2003
This review is from: Passion Session (Audio CD)
This is a cd of fantastic acoustic playing, I've listened to so much 'guitar music' lately...however, when I heard Klimbim for the first time, I was speechless. That song was like an incredible breath of fresh air for guitar oriented music. You won't be disappointed!!
