The master,

This review is from: Passions (Paperback)
Singer is the great modern master of the story. Every work of his arouses in the reader a strong desire to know what will happen next, where the whole story is going. But he is also much much more. He is a deep observer of human life, character, psychology. He is deeply knowledgable about Jewish worlds, both those in Eastern Europe and in America. In these stories very often the protagonist is a Singer- like writer who relates the adventures of a famous- writer put upon by all kinds of people. Singer is too a writer who knows how to surprise and to suddenly move us with some overall reflection or bit of wisdom. One feels he is always questing to understand the meaning of our existence here, our relation to God. There are many powerful stories in this collection. I could not recommend it more highly.
