Editorial Reviews

Vinyl LP pressing. 2011 debut album from the Auckland five-piece. the band delivers exquisite dream pop, oscillating between a calculatedly energetic beat, glitch-y rhythms, and airy synths underneath the gorgeous dual vocals of Alisa Xayalith and Thom Powers. Features the smash singles "Young Blood" and "Punching In A Dream".

5.0 out of 5 stars Feels like the next flavor of the moment March 20, 2011
Format:MP3 Music
This album feels like a mix-tape of really good bands. One song has me comparing them to Passion Pit or Temper Trap, but then the next song has me thinking M83. Then another suggests Stars, and then another suggests Radiohead. In this case, I really like the range. High energy stuff. Fun album.

I've been looking for a new band for a while now and this is by far the best album I've bought in a long while. I would describe them as blend between Snow Patrol, Mates of the State, and Passion Pit. Very good album, songs are catchy, lyrics have depth and meaning but are not extraordinary. Energetic, fun, emotional.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good for its strong pieces. September 21, 2010
Format:Audio CD
No, it isn't the perfect album and no every song isn't perfect. However, there a lot of good tracks on this cd like "young blood" and "girls like you", "all of this", "punching in a dream", and "bells." I liked some best coast stuff and enjoyed some of the tracks off of the "young" ep by summer camp. So if you enjoy those you might enjoy this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Can't..stop..listening... August 22, 2011
By Glitch
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
I rarely buy albums. I had heard about Naked and Famous through the "Related Videos" section on youtube after listening to songs by The Xx. I listened to "Young Blood" and was pretty impressed straight off the bat. I looked them up here on Amazon and saw what a good rating this CD had received, liked the music samples, and especially the $6 price for a full CD. I took the leap and decided to purchase my 2nd album of the year through Amazon. I am so happy I did. I have had this CD playing on repeat on my iPod since. Their music is very unique. As one reviewer put it earlier, one song seems like Radiohead, then the next like Passion Pit and so on. Its very hypnotizing stuff. Awesome CD, more than worthy of the 6 dollar price tag.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great new electronic music February 17, 2013
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
Got this album for "Young Blood" which I heard on an episode of Chuck. Originally I was going to just buy the single, but I heard a few other tracks and was convinced to buy the album, which has turned out great.
This is well-written, melodic electronic music with no harshness or overwhelming bass line. The female vocalist has a pleasant voice, the lyrics are better than the throwaway trash in too much popular music, and the track assortment and arrangement for this album are quite nice. Punching In A Dream, The Sun, Eyes, No Way....the first half of the album is good fun, and quite energetic. The second half gets slightly more serious, but never so much so as to feel forced or out of place. I can see why this New Zealand band has won so many awards recently.
As previous posters said, if you like Passion Pit, Snow Patrol, Stars, M83, or anything with origins in synthpop or post-punk, you should get this album, and then keep an eye out for what's next for this band.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Indie Rock December 6, 2011
Format:Audio CD
"Passive Me, Aggressive You" by The Naked and Famous contains a clever blend of indie rock and electronic music. The vocals in each of the songs convey intense and organic emotion. My favorite song on this collection is "The Sun." "Passive Me, Aggressive You" is best for anyone that is curious to hear unique songs of the indie rock, alternative rock, and or electronica music genres.

5.0 out of 5 stars A rare good album October 7, 2011
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Back in the 90's I listened strictly to rock- alternative, punk, metal, anything as long as it was rock. I fell out of this the past decade or so, as the rock bands just aren't that great anymore. Lately I'd been listening to just about everything except rock.

This band gives me hope.

I say they're a rock band because 1. that's what they call themselves according to their interview; and 2. they actually list Nine Inch Nails as one of their big influences, and I actually can see that in their music--along with some other 80s/90s sounds like Souxie and the Banshees and Smashing Pumpkins. Although not as dark as NIN, they do have more of a traditional "band" sound than MGMT or some of the others they're being compared to. I may not have cared for all the synth as much 10 years ago, but maybe listening to more electronica and house/dance lately has turned me to it. In any case, if this is the direction of new alternative I like it.

I'm seeing them live in 2 weeks and I really hope they're as good in person; that will win them a fan for life. It's nice to come back to my favorite genre of music.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Album of 2011: Transcendent and Timeless April 13, 2011
By Ihvahn
Format:MP3 Music
The Naked and Famous has single-handedly changed my entire taste in music. It is the album by which I shall judge all others before I buy them. I first ordered the mp3 only version of this album back in late 2010 and haven't stopped listening to it since. I loved it so much that I bought the $30 deluxe version just to listen to more songs from the EPs (not to mention stare at the band's signatures).

Guided by the powerfully unique vocals of Alisa Xayalith and the endless creativity of Thom Powers, "Passive Me, Aggressive You", in contrast to its title, floors you with waves of sound very much like My Bloody Valentine's "Loveless", while often driving anthem-like choruses into your head until you can't help but sing them out loud. However, it's difficult to pin TNAF in a certain style, ranging from spacey synthesizers in "Punching in a Dream" to raging guitar noise (probably inspired by Billy Corgan solos) in "A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing", and the driving beats of "All of This" to the ballad-like "Jilted Lovers". Just listen to "No Way" and you'll hear all of the aforementioned in one song - simply epic. As if the music itself wasn't emotionally charged enough, the lyrics bring to mind the heartache of lovers in peril and the frustration of the teenage years.

All of my raving raises an interesting question: "Is this album so good that no one, not even the band themselves, can top it?" The answer, in my opinion, is yes - how can you, when there's no comparison?

I really enjoy this band but it is not mainstream enough. Definitely worth having in your library to mess up your trashed friends.
