5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent starting point, October 3, 2008
This review is from: Passive Optical Networks: Principles and Practice (Hardcover)
This book provides a very good description of the technologies, protocols and hardware related to PONs. It foucuses mainly on G-PON and E-PON providing a good level of detail about the techniques and the possible issues in such type of networks.
The writing style makes this book easy to understand and, therefore, it's accessible to non-english readers.

5.0 out of 5 stars VERY VERY HIGHLY RECOMMNDED!!, January 18, 2008
This review is from: Passive Optical Networks: Principles and Practice (Hardcover)
Are you a researcher, senior and graduate-level college student working in the field of broadband optical access networks? If you are, then this book is for you! Editor Cedric F. Lam, has done an outstanding job of writing a book that covers the different aspects of the PON technology.

Lam, begins with the history of broadband access network and PON developments. In addition, the editor also reviews the various PON architectures and technologies. The editor then thoroughly covers PON-related optical technologies and their state of the art. Next, he focuses on the properties and characteristics of PON transceivers, which are quite different from those used with conventional two-fiber, continuous-mode optical transmission systems. Then, he reviews the ranging process and dynamic bandwidth allocation protocols, which are essential to the operation and performance of power-splitting TDM PON systems. The editor continues by discussing protection switching and traffic restoration schemes for PON systems. Finally, he covers the challenges to characterize, monitor, and diagnose optical links in a PON system.

This most excellent book provides the need for those that have a general understanding of the PON field and depth, and for those who would like to dig deeper into PON technologies and relevant areas. Perhaps more importantly, this book will serve as a comprehensive reference of PON technologies for those interested in developing and understanding this fast-growing area!
