America’s most versatile guitarist and his band peel back the years to deliver a gritty tribute to the early heroes of R&B
Looking back, it was one of the most exciting eras of American music. Tiny independent R&B labels put out jukebox singles with infectious riffs, shouted vocals, honking tenor sax solos and dance grooves that electrified black America’s clubs, bars ... Read more in Amazon's Duke Robillard Store

Duke is one of the most acclaimed modern blues artists with four 'Guitarist of The Year' awards and most recently 'Traditional Blues Artist Of The Year'. Following on the heals of Duke's Grammy nominated release, his latest has been described as "a stone return to Duke's grittiest roots dirty, gutty, house-rockin', shack-shakin', finger-bustin',down-in-the-bottom git-tar blues" by Ted Drozdowski.
Duke Robillard, now 62, reaches back to where he seems comfortable: wallowing in the blues, and relishing it. On his latest release, "Passport to the Blues", the guitar icon, whose trail of albums and studio work is nothing short of breathtaking, touches all shades of the genre.
The album's title makes sense after the first complete listen: Duke is willing to take one and all on a heady blues trip--the album is your passport. Mixing roots blues, Chicago blues, funk, soul and jazz, Duke Robillard and his cohesive outfit have laid down 12 tracks (plus an instrumental bonus track) of varying blues styles, each one its own postcard. The band uses all the tools of the blues trade ... sax, harmonica, organ, piano ... and of course, Duke's stunning fret work.
All of this adds up to a delightful album, although several songs seem to be layered over tried-and-true blues templates; in other words, predictable chord changes and the feeling you've heard the song before by lots of different artists. This, naturally, works against the freshness of most of the album. But there are plenty of twists, turns, surprises and witty lyrics.
Standout songs include "When You're Old You're Cold," good scotch-and-water jazz, and "Grey Sky Blues" a bluesy slow-burn. "Make It Rain," a Tom Waits tune, is nicely stylized. The opener, "Workin' Hard for My Uncle," is blues we all can relate to: handing our hard-earned money over to Uncle Sam. "Duke's Evening Blues" is a talking blues number, but the intimate dialogue is between the sax and guitar. "Text Me" sounds like something the Rolling Stones would have penned in the mid-70s, but the title and the lyrics will almost certainly date the album somewhere down the road....
For diehard blues enthusiasts, this is a great disc to add to your collection. After all, it is Duke Robillard, who can stand with the best of them.Read more ›
Another delightful recording by Duke Robillard! This one is as eclectic as other recent releases but more seated in the traditional rockin' blues Duke does so well. I predict ya'll will enjoy it thoroughly!
