WD Released these updated versions of the Ultra's 500GB, 1TB , 2TB, and a new 3TB. (For the 2TB The old version was Model # WDBMWV0020BBK-NESN and new version is Model # WDBBKD0020BBK-NESN)
I researched if there are any differences, so here is what I came up with...

Pros
Overall Size of new model is a tiny bit smaller ( see picture for comparison of dimensions on each new model vs old model )
Higher Capacity Available - Now Up to 3TB vs the older model only up to 2TB capacity
Optional 256-bit AES hardware encryption
Now available in white

Same as Old Model Nothing Changed
Weight is the same exact at 0.50 lbs ( 0.23 kg )
Automatic local and cloud backup
Comes in 4 colors ( they still offer black, and blue, red became berry and they replaced titanium for white on the newer models)
USB 3.0 connectivity
Formatted for Windows, reformatting required for Mac

Fine USB 3.0 Drive, Now a 3TB Model, Faster Than Previous Model

This is the latest generation of the many My Passport drives I've owned or purchased for clients. They have proven reliable and good performers. They have incrementally improved with each new generation.

BOTTOM LINE (for the impatient):
The new revision is a little bit faster and it now has a 3TB model. This My Passport Ultra has a more attractive satiny finish and there is now a white model to fit in better for Mac users. Otherwise it's almost identical to the older model.

If these differences are not important for you, you may want to get this or last year's My Passport Ultra depending on which is least expensive. You'll have an excellent drive in either case.

SUMMARY:
The My Passport USB 3.0 drives are simple to use and come with reasonable software tools and backup/sync software. There are Mac versions of WD tools on this drive as well as the Windows tools. The newer software can also be downloaded for older models. I don't use this software, but plenty of people do as basic backup and/or sync with your WD MyPassport.

Pluses:
+ This drive works fine with Linux or Mac out of the box. It performs best when reformatted with a native file system for the respective operating system.
+ This generation adds a 3TB model to the 500GB, 1TB and 2TB sizes in previous versions.
+ This drive is faster than the last generation. Up to 25% faster in benchmarks, but just noticeable in practical use.
+ The form factor of the new drive is almost exactly the same as before and they have a nice satin like finish.Read more ›

I know almost nothing about computers but I've had difficulties in the past that caused me to lose saved files (including some of my writing) so I thought an external hard drive would be a good investment.

This was extremely easy to use. I just plugged it in and followed the instructions in the "User Manuals" folder (ENG for English). After a quick download, I was able to set my back-up preferences (hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, etc.) and then click and drag my files into the Passport.

Although my iTunes are saved in the Cloud, I was even able to fit my extensive music collection on the Passport.

If there's any fancier or more high tech function this performs, I'm not aware of them and therefore will probably never have occasion to use them. However, as a self-professed Luddite, I'm satisfied that my work is now safe from future computer failure.

I only have had this set up for three days. It was a very easy set-up. Appears to be working as advertised. Initial backup for my complete C Drive took about eight hours. I set the backups daily at 12:00 Noon, they take eight to ten minutes. Of course, the proof of the pudding lies in restoring the files if needed. I hope I won't need to find that out.

Compact Drive with Fast Transfer Speeds

There is so much to love about this hard drive. First, it has a huge capacity. When I think about the drives I've had over the years, it floors me that I can carry 2TB in the palm of my hand. This is slightly larger than a deck of cards and comes with the USB cable.

I've been copying photos to it (a huge amount) and have had no trouble with transfers. I've been getting transfer speeds of 60-65MB per second. I'm about to start transferring (copying) all my client files - about 700 GB - to it to take with me on a trip oversees. That way, I can have access to them if someone needs anything while away. Because this is so small, it is easy enough to pack in a carry-on which makes me really happy.

It's hard to believe the price as well. I've spent hundreds of dollars on 500 GB, 1 TB and 2TB drives over the years. At present, it is only $99 for a compact, portable 2TB drive. I know in a year that will seem like a lot but for now, it's just right.
