IBS Delivers Again,
By Brian M. Napoletano "Workers of the world, un... (West Lafayette, IN United States) - See all my reviews (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Passport to World Band Radio (Paperback)
Once again, the folks at International Broadcasting Services, Ltd. have delivered a high-quality, usable shortwave listening guide. The 2008 edition of "Passport" contains a fresh round of candid reviews of portable, recordable, emergency, laptop, table-top, professional and PC receivers, wire and compact antennas and 2008's "Top Ten" radio programmes. The feature articles this year discuss Casbah and Trans World Radio.
The 2008 edition provides updated versions of "Passport's" various resources. The propagation condition forecasts have been updated, as has the ever-popular hourly listing of the major international English broadcasts around the world and around the clock. There's also helpful information in the section for new listeners entitled "Quick Start", and the "Worldly Words" glossary provides useful definitions of many of the terms that tend to enter the vocabularies of shortwave listeners (for instance, it settled for me whether the plural is antennas or antennae, and helped me understand why dual conversion is a good thing). "Passport" also offers plenty of other helpful information, such as the addresses of the major international broadcasting stations and the famous frequency-by-frequency list of broadcasts known as the "blue pages. The fact that they managed to cram all this into 592 legible pages is, in my opinion, quite a feat. I can see now why "Passport" is considered one of the top listening guides for world radio.

THE guide to shortwave listening!,
By
This review is from: Passport to World Band Radio (Paperback)
I've been SWLing (shortwave listening) since I was about 8 years old. Even though there are a lot of internet resources out there for finding shortwave frequencies and broadcast times, none are as user-friendly and well designed as this book. It is your "TV Guide" to all things shortwave. In addition to the broadcast guide, Passport also has the best radio reviews, beginner's guide and articles about shortwave broadcasters around the world. If you are new to SWLing, or have just purchased a radio for someone else, the Passport to World Band Radio is a must!

I'm new to shortwave listening and I found this book to be very practical and useful. The feature articles are interesting, the equipment reviews helpful, and the list of terminology and definitions (Worldly Words) is great. I will definitely buy the 2009 edition as well.

I've been buying "Passport" about every two years for the last ten or twelve years. This is without a doubt, consistently the best publication on the market for the shortwave amateur and enthusiast alike.

This is an extremely fine SW (Shortwave) radio listening guide. I am very glad we bought it. I am also extremely happy with all the great information provided. It has so much information however that it may take all year for me to get through it all before the next official issue is produced. Monthly updates are also available for free on the world wide web (which are also very informative).

Great intoduction to the format with all kind of info about radios so you can make an educated decision on purchases of equipment. Also a great listing of frequencies & broadcasters worldwide to help tune in at the right time. I wouldn't be without this book every year. A must have.

For all the information here, I can't believe this book didn't cost twice as much! Reviews, radio listings, a glossary of terms, etc. Passport to World Band Radio, 2008 really expanded my radio experience by opening my eyes up and tuning my ears into what all else is out there!

Like every year Passport To World Band Radio delivers beyond what one can expect in ANY reference type literature.
And at the Amazon price I bought it for... Even better, considering these can retail for twenty five or more depending on what source you buy it from. Anyone who wants broadcast shortwave information quickly yet accurately should NOT miss this copy or any other year for that matter. Happy Shopping Crista |
