5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Offering From the Hallmark Hall of Fame, December 6, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Past the Bleachers [VHS] (VHS Tape)
There are a few holes in the plot, some questions should have been answered but weren't, and at times the movie is a bit choppy. But this is one heck of a good film. This is what the Hallmark Hall of Fame's reputation was built on-- well-written and produced drama that isn't afraid to let the viewer do a little thinking about the movie's message (which, in this case, concerned itself with the many meanings of catharsis).

The entire cast is great, but I wish the Barnard Hughes character was fleshed out at bit more. This is one movie that deserves a repeat (and more) viewing. There is enough going on in the film at several levels that it has much to offer to a wide variety of audiences. Aside from the minor gripes above, I can only say good things about the film. At 2 hours, you would think the film was long enough, but I finished it wishing for more (something I can't say about alot of the movies competing for my entertainment dollar these days!).

Nice job! ***** (5 stars)

I thought the movie was very good and touching. Richard Dean Anderson did a wonderful job, as always. The only problem I found with the story was that it didn't get detailed enough. The character had a couple of major events happening in his life and they just skimmed over them. The movie ends and you never find out how the big events turned out. Good story, good acting, and worth watching, it just has a couple of holes.

Heart-gripping tale of a new beginning. A must see movie for anyone who enjoys mystery and morality in a story.

Richard Dean Anderson was once again at his best in this family style movie. It was both emotive and encouraging, outlining the pain felt at the loss of a child and the range of emotions that go along with that, that must be dealt with. The young Grayson Fricke was equally good in playing the role of the boy who was unable to speak but filled the void in the lives of the Parishes. Bernard Hughes, well known from Sister Act II, and Doc Hollywood, completed the mix with his role.
