Book Description

January 22, 2010
I am a DNA dead-end. The journey of a genetic signature that originated tens of thousands of years ago and wound its way through the ages, the eras, the centuries and generations of my maternal ancestors to fuse into my being at the moment of my own conception ends with me.

Maternal DNA, called mitochondrial DNA or MtDNA, is passed by mothers to all their children, male or female, but only daughters can pass it on to the next generation. That means that the MtDNA passed on by mother to daughter for thousands of years remains the very same MtDNA. Mine is the same as that of my great-great-great-grandmother, Delia Merryman Hough who lived and died in Ireland in the early-mid 1800s and it is the same as that of her great-great-great-grandmother. The river of MtDNA that originated in some ancient time tens of thousands of years ago flowed forth down the generations thrusting off tributaries that spawned streams, those streams giving birth to delicate rivulets, each carrying the seeds of MtDNA to succeeding generations. Whenever a woman does not give birth to a daughter, she becomes a DNA dam, a DNA dead-end....like me. The universe is full of twinkling MtDNA stars and every day some of them burn out.

My maternal DNA was one of many hereditary gifts given to me by my ancestors including my dear grandmother Kate. Kate survived a sad and turbulent childhood at the turn of the twentieth century in order to make that gift

which resulted in my safe, secure childhood, starkly different from her own. The eighteenth century German writer Jean Paul Richter wrote: "Memories are the only paradise from which we can never be expelled" but there is another side to that coin: memories can also be a prison that we must escape.

For more than thirty years during Kate's life and after her death, I struggled to research her family lineage and history, piecing together tiny fragments, chasing elusive clues, determined to discover her "story" and dilute her painful childhood memories with a broad tale of the generations that defined us. This is that tale, her tale and mine. Time can't "heal all wounds" but traveling its dusty, winding paths searching for its long-lost stories can be a journey of love that ultimately soothes those wounds with the balm of context and perspective.

"..an excellent example of taking genealogy far beyond just names and dates....valuable to anyone who has an interest in the journey of seeking their ancestors."
--Genealogy Society of New Jersey - Book Review - January 2011

Sayreville Author Moves Forward By Sailing Into Past

By MARYLOU MORANO Specially Written for The Westfield Leader and The Times

WESTFIELD - The pursuit of her Irish family roots took Sayreville author Maureen Wlodarczyk 35 years in time and three thousand miles in travel, but in the end, she discovered a family history that reaches back 200 years. Ms. Wlodarczyk writes about her quest in her book "Past-Forward: A three-decade and three-thousand mile journey home," which is written as a collection of letters to her deceased grandmother, Kate Whalen.

Tracing her ancestral history, which the author began while her grandmother was living, was not easy, as Kate's short childhood had held many disappointments. Kate's mother died young of tuberculosis, and her alcoholic father eventually placed Kate and her siblings into the care of various relatives while he joined the Army.

"When I repeatedly asked [my grandmother] about her childhood and her Irish roots, she reacted with surprise that I ...would be interested, saying, `It was all in the past, and doesn't matter anymore,'" writes Ms. Wlodarczyk in the introduction of her book. Ms. Wlodarczyk's painstaking research on both sides of the Atlantic led to the discovery that Kate's greatgrandparents, William and Mary Lang Flannelly, were married in Doonflin Upper, Skreen, County Sligo, on March 6, 1832, and subsequently had seven children.

In 1846, during the potato blight and Great Famine, the Flannelly family set sail for the United States on the packet ship, The Marmion. They eventually joined a large population of Irish immigrants who had settled in Jersey City.

In addition to learning how Ms. Wlodarczyk traced the history of the Flannelly Clan, readers of "Past-Forward" will be treated to glimpses of life in the pre-Jersey City days when it was known as Paulus Hook, as well as interesting facts about the experiences of Hudson County soldiers during the Civil War. Ms. Wlodarczyk follows her family's legacy up until 1935, the year of Kate's father's death.

"Solving the mystery of my grandmother Kate's Irish family roots and discovering the multigenerational trials and tragedies that family experienced...has made my love, respect and admiration for her resonate with the realization of how much our ancestors sacrificed and endured so that we might live," said Ms. Wlodarczyk.

The book is well-researched, with references to documented historical sources. Ms. Wlodarczyk's shares her experience as a genealogical researcher with others who are attempting to trace their family's ancestry. "I now make it a point to emphasize the importance of seeking out the oldest living family members, i n c l u d i n g extended family and even estranged family if you can get their cooperation," she writes. "I can think of a hundred questions I could have and should have asked [Kate]."

In addition to her genealogical work, Ms. Wlodarczyk is a senior operations manager and consultant in the commercial real-estate financial-services industry. She is also a hobbyist folk artist and painter, as well as an antique collector. She presently serves as an officer in the Flannelly Clan Organization, based in Dublin, Ireland. -- The Westfield Leader - MaryLou Morano - April 29, 2010

I found the author's quest for the truth fascinating. Everyone would like to be able to unravel some forgotten mysteries to find out the details about their ancestors. Most people however, did not possess the determination or perserverance to stay the course and follow all leads, no matter how seemingly insignificant. This book can be a wonderful learning experience for all would-be family history researchers.

This book captures what life was like during the potato famine in Ireland and a family's strugle to survive. The author's long lived quest and determination to research and unfold the truth about her grandmother's life, which had been a secret up until now. Maureen's journey to Ireland and the fascinating family history she discovered has encourage me to research my roots. I highly recommend reading this book.

I enjoyed reading Past-Forward very much and was immediately drawn into the story of the family history of the writer. Since I am of Russian/Polish ancestory, what I knew about Ireland was from history books. Mrs.Woldarczyk, detailed vividly how cruel the landowners could be especially when the potato famine hit, many of the citizens were forced out of Ireland or risk starvation or death. What I found amazing was the writer was able to trace so many of her roots and possibly walk the same streets that her ancestors might have walked on. When I finished reading the book, I realized that so much of our family history (mine included) probably endured some of the same circumstances forcing them to move from their family and homeland, probably never to return.
