"Immediately upon reading Mr. Patterson's poems, I am impressed by his adept wielding of words in such a way as to inspire beauty and colorful imagery, while successfully attaining a complex simplicity in his poetry, exploring such subjects as love, relationships, the meaning and mystery of life, the immutability of death, and the inner thoughts of man.

In certain of his poems, he addresses those thoughts and doubts which we are often plagued by, and is not afraid to express the inner fears which we all share, including those thoughts of a droll, monotonous existence, the seeming emptiness and futility of life we all feel at times.

One example, "If Only", explores by reminiscence, the wisdom of experience, the regrets of past mistakes, and the wishful yearning to change that which has already occurred.

Other of his poems express a fresh, almost child-like wonder at the things of life, while at the same time challenging mental stimulation at the riddles masked in poetic tones.

The poems often beg a second reading, and even a third, as they prompt you to ponder inwardly the mysteries addressed, while challenging you tosee life through the writer's eyes.

As a whole, reading his poetry is like taking a quiet journey. The writer expresses his own worldly, often mystical, views of life, death, and the journey in-between with melodic rhythms and soothing lines, allowing an almost meditative effect upon the reader."

Wes Patterson's poetry speaks eloquently and powerfully on subjects that often fascinate as well as confound us: our perceptions of God, our place in the universe, the meaning of life and love, and the subtleties and complexities of our interactions with one another. In evocative and thought-provoking prose, Mr. Patterson takes us on an exhilarating ride to the edges of the universe and into the depths of our souls.

In his most personal works, Mr. Patterson holds up a mirror before us and dares us to look. In words that neither vilify nor glorify, he shines a light on our souls so that we may see ourselves clearly and without bias.

Some of what we see is beautiful, as in the poem, "I", which speaks of the innate perfection of our being, the God that is within us all. Some are not-so-flattering reflections of our sometimes misguided moral principles, like "Come Home Johnny", which addresses society's glorification of death in the line of duty and how we often find it easier to worship dead heroes than to love living ones. Still others deal with the problems inherent in many of our personal relationships, as in "Bird House", which eloquently points out how we often blame each other when things go wrong because we can't face the truth about our own inadequacies.

Many of Mr. Patterson's most powerful poems, however, grapple with such esoteric questions as who we are in respect to the universe and our endless struggles to comprehend such profound subjects as God, eternity, and the meaning of life. In "Life", Mr. Patterson seems to have put his finger on the problems we encounter in trying to understand our reasons for being. In a very simple and powerful six lines, he maintains that the more we try to unravel the complexities of life, the less we really understand it. Life is, in the end, perhaps best accepted at face value.

In short, anyone who has ever asked themselves, "Who am I?...Why am I here?...Where am I going?"...or simply wants a good read, will find Wes Patterson's book well worth a look.
