Editorial Reviews

Note: THIS IS A SUPPLEMENTAL DVD TO THE JOHN WATERS NARRATED FEATURE DOCUMENTARY, PLAGUES & PLEASURES ON THE SALTON SEA.

After finishing the feature length documentary PLAGUES & PLEASURES, we had so many fantastic historical films, photos and Salton Sea artifacts that we decided to release a whole extra supplemental DVD! PAST PLEASURES AT THE SALTON SEA is a collection of short films that focus on the glory days at the Salton Sea. (94 minutes)

The DVD includes:

"A CITY IS BORN" - A hilarious real estate promotional film from the 1960s used to sell lots to prospective buyers at Salton City. It features dramatic narration, optimistic predictions of the future, an appearance by movie star Linda Darnell, and a Hawaiian luau on the shores of the Salton Sea.

"SALTON CITY HEYDAYS" - A dynamic musical slideshow of black & white photos highlighting the good times in Salton City.

"WATER SKI THE SEA" - A music video using lost 8mm home movies and a great song found on a rare 45 song poem record. It's about young love, salty romance, and water-skiing.

"NORTH SHORE MOTEL AND YACHT CLUB" - An archival sales film used to sell memberships at the yacht club that looks like a boat. This is a historical gem, as you really get a sense of the times. It features dancing in the "Commodore Room," a landing strip, and the catamaran "Aloha."

"SALTON SEA EPHEMERA" - A very unique collection of Salton Sea artifacts including matchbooks, ashtrays, sales materials, plastic beer tokens, and numerous other keepsakes. It is like walking through a Salton Sea history museum to the music of Friends of Dean Martinez.

"NORTH SHORE YACHT CLUB" - A collection of present day footage, featuring an interesting history of this Salton Sea landmark. We always regretted not finding more of a place for the club in "Plagues & Pleasures," so this gives us an opportunity to show you more about this fascinating place. Wait until you hear about the car bomb!

"SALTON BAY YACHT CLUB" - A collection of dramatic present day footage of this lost Salton City landmark, set to the music of Friends of Dean Martinez. This beloved yacht club was bulldozed several years ago, so this video gives you an idea of what it looked liked before it was erased from the face of the earth. We even get inside the abandoned structure and give you an idea of what it was like to be there.

"MIRACLE IN THE DESERT" - The second real estate promotional film used to sell Salton City in the 1960s. Simply miraculous!

"AIR TOUR OF THE SALTON SEA" - Take a helicopter tour of the Salton Sea.

And much, much more!!!

I'd gotten "Plagues & Pleasures of The Salton Sea" with John Waters & I got inspired to check this DVD out. It's a really interesting [nostalgic] trip back to the heyday of the Salton Sea. It is quite detailed in its approach & very nicely done.

Love all the photos and history on the Salton Sea. Makes me what to time warp back to its hey-day. It also exemplifies the complete and utter failure of our government to do anything in a timely matter to save it! How about cleaning it up, having a gambling zone around it and watch it flourish.....our version of Las Vegas!

I enjoy historic documentaries of places that have been lost to time and nature. The details of their heydays and history should be at least a little educational. This was nothing but the film of old advertising, some home movies (set to a soundtrack) and a musical slideshow. I've seen at least one other documentary on the Salton Sea that did not insult one's intelligence. I recommend everyone save their money, this wasn't worth the price.
