5.0 out of 5 stars They Keep Saying "None Heavier"; This CD Proves It, May 30, 2009
This was my first introduction to Crowbar. Having heard Kirk Windstein on the Down cds and learning that he had his own band, I decided to check Crowbar out. And this is the toughest, sludgiest, hardnosed stuff I've heard. I guess most people reading this review probably already know what Crowbar is all about, but if you don't, imagine taking Black Sabbath and ratcheting them down a hundred notches, getting the most darkly soulful grunge you can imagine. Like I said, I'm new to Crowbar, so I can't say if this is truly their best songs, but each here is a heavyweight champ. If you can have a single radio hit out of grunge, I think "I Gave All" is it; it's got enough grind to shift earth with and it's actually got something of a singable chorus to it. If you don't think Windstein is a master vocalist, listen to "Still I Reach"; he hits a weird high, growl note in this one that's scary and masterful at the same time. "Vacuum" starts off as an awesome mosh-pit crazed song and then slows down to a dying heart's pace. Admittedly some of the production on these songs could have been better, even after the remastering. The only song that shows the lack is "Subversion"; it's a great song, but the production sounds like a self-made, in-the-garage demo. I could talk about the rest, but what's the point? If you're into what Pantera used to do and what Down's doing now or want to hear what some band could have down instead of selling out (Windstein doesn't hesitate with a "F you" if that's what he wants to say; he hasn't changed his grinding vocals, there's all kinds of songs about what sucks about everything that needs to hear somebody say it out loud), you can't beat this. You get four live songs from New Orleans and Westwood One (for some reason Amazon has the live songs listed as two instead of four, don't know why), a great selection from the entire Crowbar catalog (I especially appreciate this; Windstein seems to be saying that if anything off any cd isn't worth representing, he's not either; in other words, he's standing by everything he's done), lots of rage, pain, suffering; breathe in the dirty South heaviness.
